Harley had a strange, scary, "episode" last night. Any thoughts?

I have quite a bit of experience with many different bulldog medical issues but this was something I have never seen or to my knowledge heard about before. -

It is kind of hard to accurately describe.

Very late last night I was getting ready for bed and Harley was laying on the floor by my computer. I went to bathroom and Harley is always then waiting at the door so he can follow me into bed.

Last night he didn't do that.  When I went to check on him he was still laying on the floor in his room.  I thought that was weird and turned on the light to check on him.  He was awake but when I called him he wouldn't move.  I then noticed his penis was about 1/2 - 3/4 erect.  It seemed darker and larger around than normal erection and was (for lack of a better description) pulsating.  I then saw that with each pulsation what appeared to be urine was dripping out.  Along with his penis, his rectum was also pulsating seemingly totally out of his control. While this was happening he seemed to not be able to get up and move. His face looked very strange, kinda like he was dazed.  Not sure if it was from pain, or he was also scared.  Harley will typically stop in his tracks whatever he is doing if offered a carrot.  I tried a carrot - he didn't move.  Got my husband up saying something was strangely wrong with Harley.  He layed beside him for a few minutes all the while the pulsating continued and he would not move.  After about 10 minutes (while I was frantically Google searching for anything that sounded like this) he got up, went outside and peed and when he came in he seemed fine.

We are completely perplexed.  What could have caused this?

Today he has been completely normal.  I did call our vet but missed their return call this afternoon and will talk with them tomorrow.

If anyone has experienced anything similar to this would really appreciate your input!

Is he Intact?

I suspect he had a wet dream :).  Nothing wrong with him.  Males when getting excited will pulsate their penis.  Dazed and Happy, He was just waiting for a cigarette.

You do learn here

Ya learn something new here everyday.

I had no idea, but it hit my funny bone....kinda.

I would have asked the same question, it's something good to know in case it ever happens here, to my boys.

agree

wet dream. the puckering of his anus is 'pumping' of the ejaculate. When I collect my males I watch for the puckering to subside to know when I have it all.

Thanks for all the fun responses! I now feel a bit silly <:-l

We of course have seen Harley (and other male dogs) aroused by many different circumstances. We had thought that was what it might be but were not aware that this could occur in male dogs while laying down without any stimulation. Thanks for your expertise.  This is my "learned something new" today.  Glad I could make a few of you smile. happy.gif

Girl, it didn't seem silly to me!

I would have known, from past owning of male dogs, what it was. But one time, Sarge had a UTI but I didn't know for sure that was what it was. I was feeling down in that area and felt something like a stick inside that area. I thought he had gotten something stuck in there and that was what the problem was. I took him to the vet only to find out they have a thin bone in there:-) I had bent and pulled on that thin trying to dislodge it....Um, boy was I embarrassed!!! I was a vet tech, too, and didn't know that it was there!

So long story short, never feel silly about asking a genuine question! It is important you know stuff and if you don't ask you won't know the next time he is just having a nice dream:-) might have cost you a vet visit:-)

I had no idea

 I wouldn't feel silly.  I still wouldn't know if you hadn't asked.

What was really funny was the fact ya never know what it's gonna be next, with a Bulldog.

We're all friends here [I hope] and I thought you did a very good job describing his condition.

I just gotta be careful cause I don't want to go past Class Clown and be an ....what was quivering?....lol
