Hacking Bulldog

Hello,

My sweet Gemma has been hacking (sounds like she's got a hairball stuck in her throat) and dry heaves Im not sure if this is normal for bulldogs.  She doesn't seem to be in distress but it makes me nervous.  Is this normal or should I be worried?

Thanks!

It sounds like kennel cough or...

an upper respiratory infection.  I would take her to the vet, if untreated they can get sicker.  Just make sure you tell them it could be contagious, so they don't make you wait in the waiting room.

When does she do it?

Are her bowls elevated?  That may help if they aren't.  Does she do it after she has been busy playing or running around being active?  Try wiping gently with a moist wash cloth inside the top of the mouth to catch the nasty.  Does she do it after waking up from a nap?  Might be the dry air and dry chops/mouth.

Otherwise yes it could be an illness like Kathy mentioned

Mine are hacking right now too

My dogs aren't coughing but it sounds like they are trying to hack up mucous. I'm am treating them with cephalexin and benadryl.

Lemon...

Many "old time" Bulldog breeders carry lemon juice to squirt in their dog's mouth to help clear their throats. Lemon juice is actually considered a mucolytic and is excellent at clearing mucus- so this might be worth a try if your pet has problems.
