Gunky nose rope ??

Clayton just turned 1 in April, he currently is on a grain free diet and I purchased a brita water pitcher a few months ago.  His nose rope and tear stains are terrible. I have been cleaning them every day and have tried applying desitin and even tried gold bond powder but the desitin seems to be a little better.  He has  distichia, and the vet has pulled out a few eyelashes on a few occasions (she cant believe how perfectly still he sits and she is able to just pluck them :) !!! I know runny eyes can cause tear stains but would that effect his nose rope? The vet says they try to hold off on surgery until he is a little older because his head is still growing and if you do surgery too soon it may have to be done again... Thanks in advance for any thoughts.......

What kind of grain free is he on?

Our Newmand gets horrible tear stains and we put him on TOTW fish and britta water.  He did great and then we switched him to grain free lamb and they came back again.  He's fine on the fish.  I would clean the nose rope with peroide on a cotton cosmetic pad , then dry, and use the desitin.  Hopefully, it will get better.  I've also been told giving a Tums every day can help with the tear stains.

orijen ...

They both are on Orijen regional red and we have been useing the orijen fish at night for variety?  Cooper who is a little over 2 has been on it since he was a year.  It was the only food he would eat, he just would turn his nose up to other brands. I tried natural balance for Clayton and california natural but did'nt notice any difference.. Cooper does wonderful on orijen, the vet always says how good his coat is. Claytons coat is great also, just having trouble with his face. I know the white faces show more, but Coopers folds are good with just baby wipes I never apply desitin to him.  I have bought solutions for tear stains but they dont seem to help..I will try just peroxide though and see if that makes a difference.  Thanks for your help

Try the Tums too...

they are supposed to help a lot with tear stains, just one a day.

What surgery are you referring to?

Is the nose rope gunky?  Some of mine get black stuff under the nose rope--I try to keep it clean and dry.  Also I find that cleaning with an ear cleaner (EpiOtic) occasionally and following with Otomaxx in the nose rope helps keep it nice longer.

My bully was on grain free and had terrible tear...

stains and his nose rope was pretty gross too no matter how much I cleaned it.  Turns out he was allergic to chicken and turkey.  I moved him to Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream and he tear stain and gunky nose rope free!

Prior to that I had tried the Tums and apple cidar vinegar too and nothing worked.

Boozer's wrinkles and rope

Boozer's wrinkles and rope are much better since I switched him to Acana Pacifica. Most days he doesn't have tear stains at all.  He has yeast infection in his rope but it was from water and moist. Business is usual now. Great results with Acana Pacifica.
