Green film over eye while being treated for eye ulcer

Hi! I have a followup question regarding eye ulcers. Tuffy's been receiving antibiotic eye ointment and artificial tears to treat his ulcer for about three days. However, he's still very squinty, doesn't open his eye much and his eye is very cloudy. Looks like there's a green film of sorts over it. Is that to be expected for a while while the ulcer heals or could that mean that the ointments aren't working?

Thanks.

That is normal

Sometimes (like in Ester's recent scratch) the grey spot will be tiny...but if it is a pretty big ulcer there will be a larger grey/cloudy spot.  It is normal and it will take a good while to go away, since it sounds like the grey spot is pretty large.  You may also see very tiny blood veins...which is good because the blood is what heals the ulcer.  The ointment will take a good 2 weeks to start the healing process.  You are likely be on weekly vet visits where they will restain the eye to determine the amount the ulcer has healed and if they will need to debrid the ulcer.  Which is like removing a scab so the ointment can continue to work on the owie.

Are you putting the ointment in 4 times per day?

Not to worry

It is probably residue of eye stain from vet. Be patient. It will take at least 2 weeks to heal. Just be very diligent with meds. Hugs to all!

When is your follow-up appointment

With Ozzy's we had to have it rechecked in a few days--they retested the eye and found it was not healing at the rate it needed to be so we were referred to the eye doctor.

Sorry it took me so long to respond!

The cloudiness has greatly diminished. And to answer your question, we went to the eye doc three weeks in a row (last one was yesterday) and the doc said his ulcer is almost nearly healed. We were giving ointments/drops 4 times a day and each time we went the doc did a thorough exam and restained. By the way, Deb, I'm impressed with how much you know about eye ulcers. The vet explained the same thing about how the blood vessels around the eye is a good thing.

Thanks everyone for all your expertise and support!
