Our 1 and half year old Bully Gramps has really bad phlegm.
When we first got him. he got pneumonia and went to a bulldog vet. they recommended we get the pallet surgery but wanted to wait till the pneumonia cleared up.
It was getting worse day by day. He wouldnt eat and started to wake up in middle of night panting. One morning he was having a hard time breathing and actually collapsed. We rushed him to the vet and they gave him antibiotics and did the whole nebulizer treatments. The bulldog vet said that they had to do the surgery with the pneumonia infection because the pallet was contributing to the pneumonia not clearing up. He had the surgery and recovered. He hasnt had any issues really until the last week.
I assume its a doggie cold but I wanted to see what everyone else thinks. We use the lemon juice on him but his phlegm is still persistent. He has gotten very sick again and I dont know if its normal for this to happen all the time and I dont want it to progress into pneumonia again.
Does anyone else have any recommendations? When he has been sleeping recently, he has been shivering and waking up panting like he is overheating.
Is it possible its allergies that are contributing to the phlegm buildup? If so, what would you recommend he takes? (He is 50 pounds)
Also, his food is nutro lamb and rice. He has eaten it since the beginning of the year and never had issues with it. We had him on the royal canin for the first 6 months but changed it because we thought maybe the food was causing the phlegm buildup.
I have always been told that some bulldogs have really bad allergies and that could be a cause.of the phlegm. I assume that if we can get a better hold of his phlegm issue he wont get this sick.
Hopefully this all makes sense to someone.
Im just a paranoid bully parent and want to make sure Im doing everything I can to have him as healthy as possible.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
I'm sorry about your boy...
that must be rough to go through. My guys have had allergies and it's mostly itching and a little clear nasal discharge, I've never seen a heavy phlegm buildup from allergies. Benedryl is what we use for our guys, you can give two 25 mg pills for his weight. Have you seen the vet again? If it were me, I'd take him in to see what was going on. They might need an xray to see if pneumonia is developing again. Good luck with your boy, I love his name.
Its tough to know if its
Its tough to know if its serious cause whenever he has gotten a doggie cold, he tends to react like a human would. he gets more tired and doesnt eat and displays discomfort. I use to bring him to the vet over every little symptom of anything and vet said its not uncommon for bulldogs to react a little more severe to illness's.
My gut feeling is he is ok, just a cold but the phlegm part is quite persistant and I think that makes him more sick than he should be.
I just wish there was something i could do to get rid of the phlegm. the lemon juice helps a little. Even the vet said he produces alot of phlegm. I wasnt sure if maybe allergies affected his sinuses to react. His eyes water a little bit but other than that he doesnt show any signs of allergies. I know my wife gets congested when her allergies act up. i was kinda hoping that allergies were the cause of this. At least that would be something that could be treated.
The first thing I would check
Would be his temp. If he's running a fever, he needs to be seen by a vet ASAP.
Also, if palate resection is done when the dog is still a pup, it may need to be redone. The palate will grow as the pup grows. It sounds as though your guy should be re-evaluated. :(

Just got back from the vet
He is recovering right now and seems a little better.
They said he has a fever and gave him some antibiotics, antihistamine's and a cough meds. They also gave us a few nebulizer treatments if needed.
They called us back just as we were getting home with the blood test results and they said he had a high white blood cell count. They said the usual is like 15 and his was 18.2 so he def has a infection that his body is fighting. They said they were gonna wait to do a chest xray but they didnt think it was necessary when they listened to his lungs with a stethescope.
He seems to be much better now but still a little sick. Ill give more updates as he progresses. thanks for the responses
:)
Great news that he's being treated...
Hope he starts feeling better. Don't hesitate to call them back if he seems any worse, pneumonia can come on quickly and an xray is the only really accurate way to tell. Merry Christmas to you and Gramps.
