Hello everyone, i have a friend who need some serious help. Vets dont seem to know what to do or say to her, so i figured i give it a try on here..ive had so many good advices overthe years from you guys.
So heres the story:
My friend's Doberman had a litter in may. 6 pups..but one didnt make it. There is this little female who is really small compares to the others. A family bought her and after like 2 weeks i think called my friend back to say the dog was dying...not eating and having water like stool..she went to the vet and they did tests and found nothing. My friend told her to bring the puppy back and that she will try to save her. The dog was so skinny..its horrible. My friend gave her only boiled rice until the stool would be more hard looking and after only 6 days she started gaining weight again. So slowly she put her back on dog food. She was doing really good but she's really small compares to the rest of the litter. Since couple days she started losing weight again...she refuse to eat much..only couple things. So she is starting to lose weight again but she still have firm stool and is really active and everything looks normal..except she refuse to eat much.At 5 months shes only 20 pounds..and her brothers and sisters are already around 50 pounds. My friend went to the vet and had some test done..no worm..stool are good. They dont know what to tell her. I dont know if you guys have heard of that before? If you have any advices it would be so much appreciated. We dont wanna lose her, shes such a sweet dog. Here are some pictures to show you the improvment and degradation of this puppy.
Heres a pîcture of her before leaving my friends house..you can see she is prefectly in shape.
Here's a picture of the litter..the smallest one on the left is the female im talking about.
Thats a picture of when the puppy came back at my friends house...its shocking..shes is way too small and the person who bought her should have brought her back way before.
Heres 2 pictures of her after only 6 days at my friends house!
Have they done x-rays or abdominal ultrasound of this puppy?
there could be something going on inside that is keeping the puppy from eating.
The person who bought it ..
said she had some done but who knows if it's true. She's gonna go to the vet and run some this week.
This puppy isn't absorbing the nutrients from the dog food.
What brand of kibble are they feeding? They need to get her on an adult limited ingredient diet in a high grade dog food (Natural Balance or similar). Get her off puppy food, it may be too rich for her system. That could be why she did fine on the beef and rice, but has declined again on the puppy food. She could be allergic to something she is eating or it is an absorption issue. I have seen and heard of that in human babies, no reason not to think it wouldn't happen in a puppy. She also could have a slight perforation somewhere in the bowel. Get her to a better vet right away. Keep her on bland diet until they can get a vet to look at her, then try the limited ingredient food....that is my advice. They need to do a barium x-ray and see what is going on in her digestive tract.
I have Doberman's but have not dealt with this in this breed.

The puppy is eating royal
The puppy is eating royal canin for large breed dogs..but for puppy.
I'll told her that. The dog seems to do really fine...she just dont wanna eat her kibbles much. So she is starting to lose weight again.
I also forgot to mention that when the family who bought her brought her back....the puppy was also having blood in her stools but with only eating boiled rice it all went away...just recently she starting to lose weight again.
It might well be the food. She just doesn't like it.
They need to switch her onto a different brand. I honestly would try Natural Balance...they make several good grain free varieties that might not be too rich for the pups system. Also, your friend can try to add some plain, fat free yogurt to the pups food to get her interested in eating and help with digestion. One tablespoon per meal. They can also add a little cooked rice to each meal to help solid things up. But I would at least get her off the food she is on, I think that may be part of the issue.
If there was blood in the stool it was probably caused by irritation of the bowel. The people may have done a food change with the pup and put her on something that was a low quality food. You never know.
Again, best wishes to your friend.

An idea
Okay, obviously I'm biased but I'd try giving her some raw... I read a few articles today where vets couldn't figure out what was wrong with a dog and it was basically failing to thrive with similar symptoms and the owners were instructed as a last resort to switch to raw and it saved the dog's life. I would try that. I would also add some benebac or Fortiflora. (even if he doesn't decide to try raw) - Also, raw is complicated so if he's not studdied up on it, and he may not have the time, then try processed raw first? - Other girls may have better advise but this seams like a minimally invasive option...
Was the dog throwing up it's food? I was thinking maybe an obstruction but if that were the case it would bloat and throw it's food up. Then when I read about a preforation I was thinking that couldn't be the case (but I'm not a vet so don't take my word) because if it had a preforation the dog would bloat up and the food would eventually rot in it's stomach and it would become septic and die before it even got to that emaciated point.
Maybe try some fading puppy drops.. I don't know exactly what's in them but I know breeders use them when they have puppies who are failing to thrive and they've been known to save entire litters.
I don't remember if you said whether or not they checked for worms (rather than just worming) because the puppy could have hookworms too. Sometimes worming doesn't do the trick because hookworms can sort of hide and lie dormant... the worms could have been picked up through the bitch's milk or in the earth around the puppies new home. If this is the case maybe the wormer did the trick on the first batch of hookworms but other's had already gone dormat and then the worms started to reproduce and take affect again.
I'm hesitant to think that it's worms though.. The puppy was the smallest of the litter and that could just be a coincidence or there could be something causing both. It's just odd to me that he was able to recover the puppy to such a degree so quickly.
So here is another idea... it's not that solid of an idea but woould give the vet something to run a test for and rule out for sure... It could also be a poisoning of some sort... Some kid in the neighborhood, maybe they used insecticidse or their neighbors did and the stuff ran down hill. Arsenic poisoning can cause those symptoms... If it ate just enough to make it sick but somehow not enough to kill it... maybe it would recover? But arsenic tends to damage the liver and the liver would still likely start to shut down from the damage and then it could cause the puppy to go down hill again. The rice may have soaked up some of the poison too allowing the dog to recover just enough to start to gain weight? - Again it's a long shot but most tests won't show up these sorts of poison.. They'll have to run a test to look at liver enzymes. -I had a friend who's dog died from this type of poisoning because her neighbor sprayed their fenceline with pesticide while the dog was standing on the otherside near the fence.
Another idea is that the dog ate something bad? Or maybe these people were just starving it? - But then again, why would it start to lose weight again?
Has it had an EKG or any sort of heart tests? There is a chance, that since this puppy was smaller to begin with, that it has some sort of heart defect. With heart defects they can go from thriving to not thriving and back again fairly quickly. Some ride roller coasters all of their life and some just go straight down hill.... few recover with surgery
"Longevity and quality of life in dogs with this disease vary with the severity of the valve damage and the amount of blood leakage into the upper chambers of the heart. Concurrent medical conditions, age, and the physical status of the pet play a large role in determining the animal's prognosis. Clinical signs are progressive, and although they may be decreased, they never entirely resolve. Medical therapy can enhance the quality of life of the pet as well as increase life expectancy. Dogs with left-sided valvular heart disease treated with medication and a low-salt diet have an average life expectancy of about 9 months from the time heart failure begins. Abdominal fluid accumulation and body emaciation are signs of right-sided heart failure."
Another thing to consider is that she could have heartworms. I know she's very young for that but it is a possibility and there would be no worms or worm eggs in her stool. Heartworms can only be detected by a blood draw.
Other ideas that come to mine are Lyme disease which symptoms come and go...
or was the dog covered in fleas when he got it back? Possibly anemic due to fleas or ticks?
Any chance they were feeding the dog raisins or grapse as treats? (now I'm just throwing ideas out there)
Hopefully the solution is much more simple and less worriesome than the ideas I've come up with.... but these are the ones I came up with off the top of my head. I sincerely hope someone on this board or a vet is able to help soon! This pup will be in my thoughts.
Excellent information in this post.
Multiple things that could be going on with this pup. I would print this post off and take it right to a new vet, one who might look deeper into what is going on with the baby than the vet they have seen.
Best wishes. I love Dobes. My girl is 8 years old now, getting up there for a Doberman. I wish I could have a pup in my home...I am so going to miss my Kora when she is gone from us. I love that breed.

I forgot to add one thing..
She told me the puppy drink lots of water..she said more than a usual dog..shes always drinking but not eating much...
thank you for all the response..i try to send all those to my friend but she dont speak a word english so i have to translate all :)
I'll give news of the dog when I'll have some.
That changes things a bit.
She needs to get this puppy to a vet. Soon. I would suspect a few things, but none can be proved without some blood work or a urinalysis.
Is she planning on keeping this baby now? Where is this pup located? Just curious.
Amy and Sophia
Yes she decided to keep the pup..
the family was not happy with that but she just couldnt send the pup back after seeing how she came back all skinny and dying.
We are in Canada..quebec..the vet is in montreal.
the problem your looking at
is a missing enzyme.. .i assume this is from out of the USA......here is the states the puppy would be put on a enzyme that would help digest food in the digestive track....raw alone is not going to help....this puppy is slowing straving to death and needs to be helped asap...as the heart will give out...the vets should no what enzyme the puppy needs....also goats milk would be a big help the fresher the better...it has alot of fat and dogs can digest it easily
Thank you Judy, that is my thought as well.
She isn't absorbing the nutrients and needs assistance right away. I think she needs a vet's intervention right now to get her up and running. I couldn't remember if it was enzymes though....I am getting too old to remember words like that:-) Kidding.

Thanks tons..
im sending her a message right now.
I will be keeping the little girl in my thoughts,
She is such a beautiful little girl. She looks like the doberman I had as a teenager, a beautiful red girl.
I was thinking enzymes aswell, but I couldn't think of the name..lol, so I stayed out. I really hope they figure it out soon.
I will keep her in my thoughts, Dobermans are beautiful dogs, and such sweethearts, I really hope she gets relief soon the sweet girl.
