Oliver came down with (what they thought was) a case of ring worm back in November. I didn't think it was but was told they black lighted him so that's what it must be. They put him on an anti-bacterial spray and shaved the spots back that he had. Shortly after, he started to get very lethargic, would not eat or drink, fur was coming out in clumps. He woke up one day completely covered from head to paw in a raised rash. We brought him back to the vet and they decided to do a few tests. His liver enzymes were a little high. So was his blood sugar but they chalked it up to nerves. They started talking about possible liver failure or Cushings and have refered us to a specialist.
For the skin issues, they put him on a pill form of an anti-fungal med since the spray wasn't doing anything. We completely shaved him down and have been washing him in a medicated anti-fungal/bacterial shampoo with a leave on cortisone lotion. After 3 weeks, his skin is still really bad. The original spots he had still are not healing. He was refusing to eat anything but the hamburger/rice diet so I had been feeding him that with yogurt and some green leafy veggies like spinach. Yesterday he started to eat a canned version of NB bison with a cup full of kibble mixed in. He is a little less lethargic than he was a few weeks ago.
Then the vet calls yesterday to tell me the rest of his testing came back. It was NEGATIVE for ringworm or anything fungal/bacterial. (told you so!) But they want me to continue giving him the rest of the anti-fungal medication and keep washing him in the shampoo.
I am just at a loss at to what this can be. My gut tells me there is something internal going on. He has been on good, grain free food, daily doses of a probiotic, vitamin C, fish oil and glucosamine as well as benadryl. He is on heart worm preventative, too. Below is a picture after his bath last week...you can see the red ringed lesions on his back that they thought were ringworm. The shampoo seems to bring these spots to the surface, they they dry out and become very flaky. If anyone can offer any suggestions as to where to look next I'd really appreciate the input! he is a sweet heart and has been such a good boy dealing with all the poking and prodding.

Oh Holly, what a mess for that poor boy.
I really don't have much to say except I hope you find the underlying issue quickly. I guess if it were me, I would stop the baths that seem to make the spots worse. It is probably drying him out and causing some of the irritation of its own. Maybe stop bathing all together for a couple of days and see if he gets any better. If he doesn't have a fungus, why would they tell you to continue an anti-fungal? I don't get that....
Best of lluck. I am sure there will be others who can answer with something more, lots of folks are MIA this weekend for the ballgame.

Thanks Amy
I am not really sure why they wanted us to continue with the meds either. He has another 3 weeks worth and I have been contemplating just taking him off.

Thyroid
Has Oliver's thyroid level been checked.
Alison and my little girl Matilda
I reviewed his bloodwork
It doesn't look like they checked his thyroid. I will request this at his next follow up appt. Thanks!

If tests confirm Cushings then the skin condition would most
likely be calcinosis cutis which is complication of Cushing's. Has he been taking predisone recently? Cushing's/calcinosis can occur naturally but often is a result of long term pred use. Hope you get some answers soon.

Great read!
Thanks Alison! I have heard about this before and I actually put Oliver through the clense when we rescued him back in August. He came to us with a gallon sized ziplock bag full of random meds...none of which were doing any good. He had chronic ear, eye and staph infections. Since doing so, his eyes have cleared considerably and his ears are not nearly as calcified. I now keep him on a good digestive enzyme/probiotic (Wholistic Digest All) to keep his gut clean. That is why I was not surprised when the tests came back negative for anything fungal/bacterial.

Hope you find the solution and let us know
I would be interested in knowing if the thyroid test comes back low/normal. The reason I mentioned the thyroid testing is because the picture of Olivers back and sides looked just like what happen to Matilda's skin and coat, esp. the ring bald spots. Since finding out she had a low thyroid reading and was put on thyroid medicine her coat has grown back and we have no problems with bumps, redness, bald spots or itching!

could it be a combination of
could it be a combination of what he may be eating?and obviously the shampoo...hope he gets better soon
archie had a small rash under his paws...his vet told me to always clean and dry his paws and always disinfect his
b/c almost everynight taht's when he'd get his itch and rub his paw on his carpet....and b/c i was a tad paranoid
i would apply a tad of cortisone cream... and it seemed to work
Have u done an allergy test?
Maybe he is having a reaction to something that he is eating? But then again, maybe it's a combo of everything he is going thru? Have u tried eqyss shampoo, it's supposed to stop the itches. Works well for Kibby, I haven't had a skin issue since I have been using it.

immune system
My girl had mange and it was horrible. We tried everything but nothing worked. A close friend of mine gave her this ( below) and let me tell you it worked great...She looks better than she has ever looked. All her hair grew back and is nice and shiny. She started showing signs of improvment after a week. Good Luck! This is all natural! It couldn't hurt to give a boost to the immune system, with 2 capsules of Astragalus root and Echinacea capsules plus 360 mg of fish oil 2X a day You can buy these in any drug or grocery storeRoanne
