Frustrated with dental!!!

I am going back & forth with this dental issue. I don't want to risk putting Bear under. If something happens to him, I would feel so guilty. At the same time, I want him to have nice clean teeth. He is the type of bullie that does not like being touched, poked, or proded. Someone recommeded a product in a discussion below, but will it really work? I would hate to spend $$$ and it not work. I know he has tarter builduo. I have never cleaned his teeth with a toothbrush or my finger before except when bathing I rinse his mouth out. Thanks in advance.

answer this....

are any of his teeth rotten...are his gums swollen inflammed...does his breath stink becasue of his  teeth???  bad dental hygiene will casue heart and kidney problems....

i assume your not a raw feeder or i would suggest some lamb chops  for him....  give him a bully stick to chew and break off that tarter.... get him a pig foot....

their are charcoal dog biscuits...it takes time but it will start to break the tarter up...so if you only have tarter and not and rotten broken teeth go conseravtive...and avoid surgery for now

mmmmm piggy feet to kkep my teeth clean and breath fresh

I don't think his teeth are rotten but...

He does have tarter buildup and his gums are swollen. I am not a raw feeder. I feed him Natural Balance Duck & Potato.

He needs a dental, he already has the beginnings of periodontal

disease with the tarter and swollen gums.  Brushing etc. works if you started it before the damage was done, I would get the dental and then start a home dental program to avoid it in the future.

if he has swollen gums....

your going to need a dental......i would give myself 60 days between going under...did he have any problems from his last surgery? also i would put him on 7 days of antibotics before surgery....dental work is not as bad as invasive body surgery..... so yes you need to get those teeth done....then get on a good dental program....

good luck keep us posted...and if you have any more worries or question just ask....

He has NEVER had surgery before. Never been put under..

This is why I am so nervous. He had lab work done and everything looks fine. What would you do?

If his labs came back fine

and his gums are swollen then I would say do the dental. I know you will be a complete nervous wreck the whole time he's under, but better not to wait and let his teeth and gums get worse and worse, then he'll need to be under even longer!

what worries you....

i have wilson he has a hypolastic treachea...he has allergies so bad i carry a epi pen....he has allergies to certain antibotics.....surgery for him would be a life or death situation and thats becasue of his allergies and such...

now i have charlie he has had several surgies all before he was two.....no problems at all....came thru with flying colors....

so i would ask is your dog a high risk? and if you feel yes why what does he have?

you have to go do this with a open heart and not worry your dog is going to die....90% of bulldogs survive surgery ...... ask your vet what would happen in an emergency...most vet tech do the  dental work...ask if the vet is staying in the building if a problem arose.....

i think your over worried but believe me i understand.....

i also have casper spayed no problems.....

I think I am overworried....

The vet assured me he has done plenty of bulldogs. I think my worst fear is loosing him or like a poster noted in one of the below discussion, her dog had problems 6 months down the line. Bear's allergies & yeast infection are his main problems. Nothing else. Is it possible for a bulldog to be allergic to the type of anesthesia given?

did you read that article below?

on yeast and allergies and skin issues? It really does have some excellent information in it.

And your vet will most likely NOT do the anesthesia if he feels in any way that your dog wont' handle it.

Yes I did read it;however...

It was a bit overwhelming with the enzymes & all. Thanks for your input. I greatly appreaciate it. Bear is our boy. My husband & I have been married for 8 years and have no kids yet. So he is like our kid. I know you guys understand what its like.

go do your dental.....

he sounds like a healthy happy dog that will have no problems.....90% of bulldogs survie surgery....this is a dental...its not invasive like a surgery...it is ncessary... dental problems casue heart and kidney problems that are life threating....do your blood work...make sure your vet knows bulls and get it done....

i am also assuming your vet wants this done.....
