food issues

My nine month old male bulldog, Maximus, has been eating solid gold holistique blendz and has had messy poops and vomiting and today very lethargic. taking him to vet tomorrow.  before this he ate nature's choice lamb n rice but didn't like it.  what is a good food?  any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  i am a first-time bulldog owner and having trouble choosing a good food for him.  thanks

People here feed a variety of foods

Some of us (me included) believe in feeding raw. Everyone here loves there bullies and you will get a variety of suggestions. Maybe it would help you to do a search to find out a method that will work best for you.

I did a search and have

I did a search and have learned Max is not the only one with food issues!  it's very over-whelming actually.

Lol, that's probably an understatement

I had Kofi on Wellness grain free kibble. She's 3&1/2. My first bulldog. When she lost interest in it and began developing a few bald spots I switched to raw. There is a very informative book you may want to check out. Unlocking the Canine Ancestral Diet by Steve Brown. He has practical advice of improving the diet no mater if you do dry, canned, frozen or homemade.

I know it's a de lima, and I hope you find what works well for you and Max.

Gotta add though, I have thoroughly enjoyed switching Kofi to raw. It has been so much simpler than I could ever have imagined. She loves it and looks great. Skin spots (diagnosed as seasonal allergies) have cleared up and no more yeasty nose rope.

Give a hug to Max for me and Kofi. Maybe someone else will have some good suggestions for you too. Keep your baby healthy!

thanks so much for your help

thanks so much for your help and advice.  will consider raw and look into finding that book.

I also do raw

Raw was my only solution.  I was feeding HIGH PRICE premium doggy kibble and everyday we had loose loose stool, red paws, red face, vomiting.  So after i did some research we did raw and this may sound nuts but after ONE day of going 100% raw...no vomit, no loose stool, and a significant decrease in redness.  I do hope you consider it as I have found my dog to be so much happier and healthier although I know for some it seems unrealistic.  Good luck!

I feed Natural Balance Bison and Sweet Potato.

Sophie does well on it. You can put them on it at any age. You will want to rotate to different varieties in the same brand to keep your bully from becoming allergic to the single source protein in the food, if you choose one of the limited ingredient foods. I would try a regular variety first though, not the limited, grain free variety. Youngsters don't need grain free unless they have allergy issues.

So all that to say, Natural Balance is what I feed, and we are doing quite well on it!

is natural balance easy to

is natural balance easy to find, say at petco, or should i buy online?

AmyandSophia's picture

Petco has it,

But if you have a store like Pets West or a specialty dog food store, they will carry it, usually for less than Petco.

Are you sure it's the kibble?

Solid Gold is a good kibble but has I have found out after 7 years of battling food allergies with Matilda, is that what works for one won't work for another. Sold Gold is working for us, right now. No, tears stains, no yeasty folds and no secondary skin problems. We feed Solid Gold, exclusively, this food also acts has her treats along with ice cubes. Matilda does not do well on higher protein levels.   We have tried so many different kinds of kibble I've lost track, but I did have to completely eliminate every other food source when trying new foods and  that means the Treats! I use her kibble as her treats and she loves ice cubes. With this all being said and saying again, what works for one may not for another.

I have no good answers for you but this is what worked for me...

Tuffy has suffered from soft, messy poops since I brought him home from the breeder. She originally had him on California Natural but it never agreed with him. So after a few months I went to Fromm Salmon A La Vegetable. Same problem. Then I tried Wellness Large Breed. No go. Turns out the only food that works form him is Purina Lamb and Rice. I know it's not a popular food these days but the has the best poop he's ever had on that food, he has tons of energy and his coat is nice and shiny. He started having some skin issues so I decided to try a better food so I went to Natural Balance LID Lamb and Rice. And guess what? Big, mushy poop again. So we're back on Purina Lamb and Rice. When he turns one I'm going to try a grain free food and see if that helps. I'm not at the point that I want to go RAW but I know that's worked wonders for a lot of dogs...

Best of luck. I know how frustrating this process can be. Ultimately you have to find the right food that works for your dog...

Hey, Purina Lamb and Rice isn't all that bad!

I might be trying it here shortly for my Doberman girl, she is eating a high end food right now and has developed gunky eyes again. She is an easy fix compared to a bully though. I can toss Kora on anything just about and she does well on it. Purina was the first food I fed, and it isn't bad. I got talked into the high end stuff though and for Sophia, it works well, but I am putting Kora back on a regular food. She just doesn't need all the no grain, fancy, high price stuff to do well!

Took Maximus to the vet this

Took Maximus to the vet this morning. turns out he may have a light case of pnuemonia(not sure how to spell it).  so he is now taking ampicillin in case of infection, theophylline a bronchodilator, and lasix for congestion.   Thanks for everyone's concern and support.  I am so glad I found this site.  I have learned alot.  I am leaning towards trying a dehydrated food, but it is so expensive and I just spent 200.00 at the vet!

Yes, it is good you took him

Yes, it is good you took him in, our Max coughed about 4 times, and seemed a little quiet, but we decided to take him in and he also had pneumonia. He recovered quickly and I hope yours does as well.
