Flea Protection

I was thinking about putting flea meds on my new Bullie.  The vet said Advantage with the best to use for senstive skin.   I have not seen any fleas so should I even put it on her - maybe wait?  She's already scatch herself and biting her feet - I don't want to make things possiably worse.

I have another bullie and she takes Comfortis, has had no problems not fleas

Both of the above dogs are 1.5 yrs old

My older dog a 7 yr old poodle has never had a flea and I haven't put flea protection in about 5 yrs. and she rolls and drags herself in the grass.  Granted she's 7 lbs and blonde and I can pick her up and look all over in 2 mins.

Any thoughts on this???

I don't use Flea control

The vets are always pushing flea medications. I believe if you bulldog has no fleas do not apply flea medication.

Flea/Tick Meds

We don't use flea/tick meds either.  Whenever we would put the solution on them they would bring ticks in.  This year we didn't give them anything.  I just kept an eye on them this year and they have been fine.  Good luck with your hunt on flea meds.

The need for flea/tick prevention varies with where you live.

I live in Alabama, where the flea/tick population is rampant.  If I didn't use protection, my dogs would be miserable.  If you don't have a problem where you live, there's no need to use it.  If you do need it, there's a great website where you can save a lot of money on the medications over buying them at the vet or at a pet supply store.  It's http://www.maakenterprises.com/?Click=93424  They usually have free shipping deals going on, too.  Just order early...it takes them a couple of weeks to get the product to you.

What Meds.

What Flea meds do you use?

Mostly...

I use Frontline Plus.  When fleas are a particular problem, like this year where I live, I alternate between Frontline Plus and Promeris to prevent the fleas from adapting to the medication.

I would try sticking with Comfortis

I just learned from my vet's office that I should keep my boy on Comfortis. It was stated - with the tropicals (advantage and others) fleas have more opportunties to bite the dog than Comfortis. Where with comfortis, the fleas only gets one bite in and die.

I have to wait until her heartworm meds wear off - the breeder gave her Ivermectin Shot on 6th, then I'n going to check with the vet.
