First scary episode feeding raw

Kofi has been on raw since June 19th, and many of you have been following our progress. She loves it, and is thriving.

Yesterday was the first time that I gave her a center cut neck bone. It was very meaty, and she enjoyed it thoroughly, eating on it for about twenty minutes.

This morning she woke me and was anxious to get outside (rare, but has happened before). She found her spot, did her poo which ended somewhat runny. I just thought that since she was introduced to a new raw source she needed to adjust. But then she acted strangely, sort of uncomfortable and was not ready to come inside again. She spent some time trying to find another spot, even doing a strange stretch....I was concerned (it's me remember?).

Finally, she came inside and ate her breakfast heartily. The rest of our day seemed as usual.

Tonight when she did her poo.......queasy stomachs should read no further.....I examined it closely. There was a piece of bone, a little larger than a quarter, not square and not triangular, but somewhere in between. It was hard like marble. I cleaned it up with a stick.....remember raw poo doesn't smell, and was going to bring it into the house to examine when I dropped it and lost in the pine straw.

This has never happened before, so my conclusion is it was the neck bone. I never want to see that again, or cause any discomfort to my girl. I will grind the remaining necks up and stick to the chicken with bone in.

Just thought I'd share since many of us are new. I am so relieved that she passed it and I learned what not to give her in the future.

Taking my healthy girl off to bed now......

Sweet dreams to all, and healthy living too!

CAROL!

I saw the heading of your post and my heart sunk into my stomach!  OMG!  I saw those neck bones at the grocery store today when I picked up fresh chicken breast so I think I know which ones you are talking about.  My goodness.

Wow, I'm so relieved for you

Wow, I'm so relieved for you that your girl is doing fine! Was the bone you mentioned a pork neck bone? I've seen those before in the supermarket and even bought a couple batches of them to feed before chickening out and throwing them away. Upon closer inspection, they seemed so sharp and hard that I got scared. I know that a lot of people feed a variety of bone sources, but because I'm a weenie, my big plan is to stick to chicken and turkey as far as that goes. I'm even hesitant to feed turkey drumsticks, breasts, or wings, because as far as poultry goes, they seem hard and scary. Thus far, Eddie and Alex get their bone from chicken backs, chicken breasts, and chicken thighs, with the occasional turkey neck thrown in for a good workout (these still freak me out a little because of their size, so they chew these as I watch. I let them each chew about half of the neck into a pulp before getting the neck back from them and getting them started on chewing the other end. This way, by the time they chew their way down to the last bite, it's been crushed, and nobody has a big chunk of unchewed bone to swallow whole). Again, I'm so relieved for your sweet little girl!

Susie, Eddie, and Alex

I had already decided not to feed

turkey neck bones as I had read that they they can create a problem.

Then I saw these center cut bones and they were so meaty. I may have become overconfident. She had no problem with eating them, but the passing showed me that there is indeed a danger there.

They must have been turkey necks, but they just said center cut neck bones. I will grind them, but since I've read they are rich in calcium, they will not be a regular part of her diet, even ground.

Chicken, lamb, only softer bones in the future.

Kofi!

I am like you Carol, I tend to panic and worry about EVERY little out of the norm thing that Audrey does. I am glad that bone is gone now, but I would probably skip them un-ground also.

what kind of meat with bone

intrested in knowing what kind of meat that was....was it a chicken or pork?

Hi Judy, actually I'm

ashamed to say that I can't be sure. It just said center cut neck bones, but it was so hard that when I tried to break to grind it was impossible. I had read that turkey necks could be very hard like that, but since there was so much meat on it, I thought I would give it a try.
