first aid kits...2 things you should have.....

since the hoildays are coming two things you must have in your emergency kits

1) activated charcoal for absorbing posion.....this is so often left out and is a real life saver   (can be purchased at a drug store)

2) syrup of ipecae ..if safe to do so this will produce vomiting.....

Yes, I almost lost one to bloat

So I am extremely cautious. I've given Trace gas x several times because I thought his belly looked a little big. He wasn't bloated but I couldn't leave him without worrying that he was going to bloat so I gave him gas x.

I like liquid benadryl for emergencies because if the throat is compromised from an allergic reaction you can give the liquid benadryl rectally.

I also keep prednisone or dex on hand in case of bee stings. I lost a bulldog to a sting so I want to always be prepared.

WOW! this is such a HELPFUL list!! Thank you!!! Jacinda,

I am SO sorry you lost one of your babies due to a sting---how horrible!!!  If you don't mind me asking, do you know what type of insect

it was?   Back in the spring, we were on a road trip and all of a sudden noticed one side of Meaty's cheek was getting very swollen

and his eye was almost shut......thank goodness i carry Benadryl with me all the time  and gave him 50 mg.  I sat in the back with him

to monitor him/ make SURE he wasn't showing any s/s of respiratory (or other!) distress.  I call the closest vet, and even though

I said I was worried that he was stung, they said "sorry, we don't have any appointments today, we're swamped".....BUT, when I

pressed further and said the sting was on his FACE , they said I could bring him in.....gee, ya THINK???

We always wondered WHAT stung him, but I guess the only thing that matters is that he got a shot of a steroid and was fine.....

Again, I am SO sorry that you lost a bully because of this---(( HUGS ))

No idea

I first noticed something wasn't right when Chief started sticking his tongue out and he never stuck his tongue out. This was on a Sunday afternoon. A little later, he was still sticking out his tongue so I opened his mouth and noticed his tongue was slightly swollen. So, I gave him two benadryl and and then two more before bed time. The next morning, his tongue was swollen worse and his face was also slightly swollen. So, I gathered him up and took him immediately to the Vet. The Vet determined he was actually stung or bit by something under the tongue. He was given a shot of Dex and sent home.

The next day, he was worse so I took him to my bulldog Vet. He got another shot of Dex and the Vet told me I could either leave him there or take him home. I chose to take him home because Chief had a bit of separation anxiety. Well, a couple of hours later Chief choked while trying to eat and I was scared his throat was closing up and rushed him back to the Vet. Long story short, he never recovered  and died a week after his first symptoms. I had a necropsy performed and all it showed was bacterial pneumonia.
