Fainting

I'm hoping someone can help with this issue. My 10 yr old rrufus began fainting last Thursday. She falls , drrools, stiffens and recevoers in less than 5 mins. She was on furosemide and prednisone, se'a had nurmrous skin issues. The vet had us stop the pred and increased the furosemide to twice daily. She had 3 spells a day since thursday occuring eveyr 6 hours. We can almost time our watches by her schedule of fainting. Hs anyone expreinced this with their dogs and what did you do to address this.

I also would like to ask the questions of:

What healhty snacks (low salt, etc..) do you recommend and,

What dog food is best for skin issues, she is currently on EN that we buy from our vet.

Finally can anyone recommend a  bulldog vet in the San Jose Ca area?

thank you everyone in advance for your help and for this great webiste !

Are you sure this isn't a seizure?

It sounds like a seizure.  Have you spoken to the vet about this?

Furosemide....

....I believe is a diuretic?  Then you might need to supplement with potassium.  Check with the vet.  Good luck!

Agree--sounds more like a seizure

Which is, of course, more of a concern then the skin issue. If the activity continues I think some meds to control seiazures should be considiered--like phenobarbital or tegretal. However I am curious as to the meds prescribed for her skin problem: furosimide (lasix-a diuretic: pulls excess fluid from the body. They pee a lot. Used for heart problems like congested heart failure or respiratory problems like pneumonia. Won't do a thing for skin problems. Lasix also depletes potassium which regulates the heart. Blood tests to check potassium level and possibly give a supplement need to be done if on lasix long term. Lasix will not control seizures or help with "fainting, either.) Prednisone is a steroid. It is often used with skin issues to decrease inflammation but has a TON of side effects and will not clear up skin problems on its own. If the skin issue is due to a food allergy then going with a food low in ingredients may help--California Natural has very few ingredients. Are you sure there are no fleas or mites causing the problem (did the vet do skin scrapings>) After you get her seizures under control you might want to take her to an allergist. I know someone in San Jose. I will check with him to see what vet he uses. Good luck with your girl.

Vets says fainting

Apparently fainting can look exactly like a siezure, the difference is in the receovery. she is back to her old self within 3-5 mins. Siezures have long term effects such as "acting drunk", loss of balance etc... the lasix is to relieve excess fluid, the pred was for the skin issues.

thank you so much for your help, I'm speaking with a specialist today and if you can recommend an allergist that would be great.

great vet about 30 mins away...

i use dr. hackler at groveway vet in castro valley, i know it may be a little far, depending where you are in San Jose, but he is totally well worth it, especially since you have such a major issue.  maybe he can recommend someone closer to you for future visits. He is a bully specialist and helps with norcal bulldog rescues on a regular basis. he seems to always know whether its serious or not, and won't charge or recommend every test under the sun to get the job done! good luck!
