Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the site but not to Bulldogs. I have 2 English & a French Bulldog.....and all of the typical "issues"! My latest is with my 8 year old male English BD. He has been squinting his right eye for 2 weeks now. Of course I took him to his vet, a bulldog specialist, right away. He initially put the dye in and checked for scratches/ulcers and found none so we put him on artificial tears only at first. The reason for the conservative treatment is because he has shown some sensitivity to neomycin in the past. That did no good so after a couple days we added Gentamicin drops, which also didn't help. Last Friday the doc had me leave him there for the day so he could do the neo/poly/dex under his watch for adverse reaction. He did fine and it did help the squinting it seemed for a couple days, but now we are back to the squinting, and still on the neo/poly/dex. They tested for dry eye and ironically the eye he's NOT squinting was like a 7, and the irritated was at a 15. I thought for sure it was dry eye because he had cherry eye as a puppy and had both surgically removed. Other than the squinting his eyes don't look bad, although he does have "gook" a lot. Any thoughts? Sorry for the long post! Missy
Did your vet rule out entropian or distichia? nm

And always Winston, gone but not forgotten!
Thats what I was thinking too
maybe there are some eyelashes in there poking it.
He didn't mention either. Is
He didn't mention either. Is that something we could see with the naked eye or would I need to take him to a specialist?
If your regular vet has not mentioned it and you are not
seeing improvement in the eye, I would certainly head to a veterinary opthomologist. If there is either condition, a specialist who has done correction of these eye problems is in order. I would not trust a general non bully vet to do the surgery. Of course, when it comes to the eye, I am a real worry wart.

Dystichia and Entropian are easily recognized...
Dystichia is when lashes grow along the inside edge of the eye rather than the typical outer lashes. They are tiny white lashes usually and can be seen without much straining. Entropian is when the actual eyelid rolls inward toward the eye. Both are pretty easily repaired.
I caught something you said though, about that eye being goopy a lot lately. That can be either a sign of infection or irritation, but can also signal an allergy. My bully girl gets entropia when she has an allergy....she gets a puffy eye and then the lid rolls. Could you guy be having an allergy issue? Anythjng new in his environment that maybe triggering a reaction? Just thought I would throw that in. I would seriously get a good veterinary opthamologist to give a second opinion before you go for any type of surgical repair.

I suggest taking him to an Opthamologist
Squinting is an indication of a problem and if your Vet can't find anything wrong, I would go to an Opthamologist. It could be some small lashes rubbing against the eye.
Thank you for all of your
Thank you for all of your suggestions. He does have bad allergies...we call him the boy in the plastic bubble, we all live in Karma's bubble! Maybe there is something new that is bothering him....
