Hello-- I am new, and from Hawaii. Our 5 month old bulldog just went for a long walk in the beach park. On the way back he strated swiping at his eye, then rubbing it on the grass etc. By the time we got home it was totally shut. Now he will open it, but it is very red and looks like it is rolled back. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You need to take him to a vet...
he could have scratched the cornea, it can be quite painful and cause ulcers. Meanwhile, you can rinse it out with saline solution (contact lenses stuff will do).
thats the consensus...
I am taking him in, thanks so much! Better safe than sorry...

how on earth do you get the drops in?
i am seriously afraid that in the 30 minute struggle to get the drops in i scratched his eye again. is there a trick to this?
oh, and the vet has him in a cone. i am so sad and frazzled....

It possible he could......
have been bitten by something and that's the reason his eyes are swelling shut. Any other symptoms? What did the vet tell you?

If he's really bad about it
you could wrap his body in a towel to restrain him. But like Celine I have been able to do it when he is relaxed and sleepy.
I back Mr. Higgins into a corner
He hates it, but I am able to do it.
You may need help
BUT put him in the bathroom or a small space where he can't get far from you. Collar and leash...sit him down with his butt backed into a corner, holding him firmly in between your legs, both facing the same way, bend down and wrap your arm around and under his chin facing him up to you, for me that would be my left hand/arm because I'm right handed...with your left hand fingers open top and bottom lid of his eye...right hand has drops. Of course you will have to have the cone off when you are doing this.
Do you have anyone to help you?
Can he play while on the treatment?
Hi-- he had an ulcer, so her has the drops and the cone of shame. The cone does not work with him at all, and he is allready trying to play with our other dog. Can he play while on this treatment?

He can play .... BUT
it is very important that he doesn't get his eye scratched. So I would highly recommend you closely monitor any playtime and donlt let it get too rough. The cone is so he doesn't rub or paw at his eye and reinjure it. It can take up to 4 weeks for it to heal depending on the severity of the ulcer. I'm assuming the vet is having you come back weekly to restain to determine how well it is healing. If you are using a Poly Bac Ointment/drops (No cortisone) I would ask the vet for an extra tube to have on hand.
thanks so much...
thanks so much! i had to include a baby pic! yes, we are going back on Monday and I really dont know if I have gotten ANY of the medication in. he seems better, but his eye is not 100%...as for playing, we are trying to watch but I am so glad he perked up I dont want to seperate him from his BFF. Thanks again, and hopefully it will not take the whole 4 weeks to get our baby back to his normal self.

My method
I sit on my heels on the floor behind the dog with his butt between my legs. With my left hand,, I scratch the dog under the neck until he relaxes. Then I hold the head firmly with my left hand. With my right hand, I hold the drops between my thumb and index finger. I use the pinkie finger of my right hand to pull down on the lower lid, then put the drop into the "cup" formed by the lower lid.
I hope that makes sense.

lots of good tips,
but we are still having a hell of a time. i dont even think i can do it alone-- he is so strong and refuses to submit to anything other than our older dog. even when he's sleeping its like he's on alert and knows the minute i approach with the drops. i tried not to laugh, but yesterday when my husband finally got a drop in he was so angry he would not let my husband near him. then, when he followed my husband into the restroom, he peed on his feet and ran away...sigh...the stubborn thing isnt just a stereotype, is it?

have you ever heard of betadine alternated with gentamicin?
as treatment of ulcers? we went back today, no improvement :(
