EWWW!! What's that smell??

I was cleaning Chumlee's face and then I start to smell something nasty.  After some investigating, I discovered it was his tail pocket.

How do you clean this

How often

No there wasn't blood

Lots of dead hair

No oozing

I used a dry paper towel just to get in there and wipe to see what was going on and it was a little brownish/yellowish with lots of hair

When I did this he shook his back leg like when they do when you scratch a good spot.  (Thumper)  It must be itchy? Duh?

He has a very tight tail and it goes way in there.

*Side note* Does anyone take their bully to a groomer?  Is that a bad idea? Do you have to squeeze their anal glands if they aren't even scooting?  I'm scared...

Poor stinker    : (

LOL! You found that tail pocket:-)

Ok, now that you have found it, here is what to do with it!

If you have a shower head that you can take down and use as a sprayer, that works best. Second choice is a sink with a spray nozzle. Get Chumlee and put that bad boy in the bath tub or sink. Take the sprayer, and with luke warm water, train that spray head right into the tail pocket, but make certain the water is just warm. Move the sprayer around some to make sure the pocket is wet. then use some antibacterial hand soap or shampoo and put some your fingers (Double EEWWW!!) and then clean that pocket out as deep and gentle as you can get. Spray, rinse well, repeat the soaping. Make sure you are gentle, but get all the way into that pocket and get it clean!! Then spray it out again and run that water over it well to make certain all the loose, dead hair is out, too. Dry well with paper towels, again being very gentle. You can use a blow dryer set on low and hold it 6 inches or more from the pocket, and get it really dry that way but be careful with the heat. Anyway, dry well. If you have Gold Bond powder you can squeeze a bit in around the pocket to make sure it is dry. Or you can use Desitin, it will absorb any dampness in there.

Do this a couple times a week, maybe even as little as once a week, and your buddy's tail pocket will stay clean and no smelly!

Good luck!

The aftermath...

Before I put him in the tub, I wiped in his pocket with a paper towel to see what we were working with today and it was yellowish/brownish with a little bit of pink.   So we got into the tub and used soap and water.  He was getting pretty upset, which is very unlike him.  I talked to him tried to calm him down, he just wasn't having a good time.  After I got him rinsed off he wouldn't let me dry him with a towel.  I let him run around a little bit to get rid of that energy.  His tail pocket is very hard to get into and his tail is very tight in there, I'm already starting to worry that this is the beginning of a long running issue for him.  I could barely get in there to feel as though I was really even cleaning it.  I cut a piece of the ShamWow thinking that it would just soak up as much moisture as possible without him running away.  While I was trying to dry it he growled and turned his head back at me, he has never done this before!  Not letting him "win," I grabbed a paper towel and started dabbing him dry instead of wiping.  I still think it's a little wet but he is now sleeping.......

Since we got some pink today, do we need to put some goop in there? What kind?   And do we have to wipe it back out?

So unlike my Chumlee...  : (

Ohhhhh the tail pocket.lol

Something very similar happened to us. I never really cleaned it well, until one day I was like "WHAT IS THAT SMELL." After investigating like you, I found the dreaded pocket. The first few days were gross because I feel like as much as I cleaned it, the yuck just kept coming. Once it got under control, it def. was a better situation.

As far as our routine, it's a bit different then Amy's. Amy's way of cleaning most definetly sounds like the best way, but unfortanatly, the just speaking about the "tub" or "bath" makes George run under the table, so I can't get him to just chill out and let me clean it weekly in the tub. What we have done and has worked for us was to get the unscented pet wipes from PetCo and every other night, before bed with our daily routine we give it a good clean with the wipe...then gently with a paper towel, dry it. We've been doing this for about a year now and so far so good.

Like I said, I def. suggest Amy's method first (it's probably alot cleaner) but incase Chumlee isn't digging it, you can give our method a shot!

**As far as the groomer goes, a lot of people use one (even lots of people on the board). I've only taken George once or twice for his nails, but recently I heard a horror story and now I'm petrified. My breeder just had a puppy buyer lose a dog because the bully was not happy with the leash thing on while on the table and squirmed off the table and broke his neck and passed. My only suggestion is, if you use a groomer, make sure it's someone you trust or even will allow you to stay with your bully!

Poor George. I never consider one might dislike water:-)

Thanks for giving good advice should the case be this is a water hating bully:-) I always assume they all like baths...Sophia LOVES them:-)

we use

one of two things. if things are 'fine', meaning daily cleaning and no yuck, i use a baby wipe with a little bit of witch hazel on it. i follow up with a little panalog ointment and powder the rest of her rump and presto, no yuck.

i have also used a little bit of cider vinegar diluted with sterile buffered saline. put this on a little pledget (you know those things that people take makeup off with) swirl it around, and use another to dry. cider vinegar is acidic, and it will sting irritated tissue so you MUST dilute it, but for regular cleaning of an unirritated bum it is fine.

malacetic wipes, which you can buy on the net or at a vet (much cheaper on Amazon!!!) work great too. However, for less than half the price you can buy a small bottle of raw cider vinegar and contact lens solution and do this yourself. I did some reading and discovered that the two main ingredients in Malacetic are Acetic Acid (vinegar) and Boric Acid (contact lens solution).

thanks for the info

on the malacetic wipes alternative. they do work on itchy feet, but we hate the smell of the wipes. going to try the vinegar and the contact lens solution.

Tail Pocket...

For Farley's tight little "Cinnamon Roll" I use a 2% Chlorhexidine solution diluted down at 2tsp per gallon of water and pour over some gauze pads, I keep them all in a tupperware container and wipe him down with those daily, I use them in his nose rope and wrinkles too.  When he breaks out in acne on his chin sometimes I use the Chloriexidine full strength for a few days and it clears right up. You can buy it on Amazon for about $12 a gallon. I get it at work for a lot less, but it works great!!

Tight Tail

My previous bully had the CUTEST little cinnamon bun tail, especially when he was a pup.  But, it was always stinky and whenever he had a bowel movement, we would "do the butt" and he'd run to the bathroom to sit down.  We had a whole system...put on rubber gloves, wiped with baby wipes, then tp, then put desitin in there.

The best thing we did was have his tail removed when our daughter was born.  I couldn't handle the "butt juice" on the rug knowing an infant would be crawling around.  Our breeder had recommended it and we'd waited until he was about 4 1/2 b/c his tail was so cute.  He was MUCH happier and more comfortable, never squirming around on the carpet with an itchy butt.
