Is there anyway to tell what is causing the junk that builds up in the ears? Is there visual difference between a yeast infection and a bacterial infection?
i am not sure, but i think if the ear wax is of normal texture, like waxy, light brownish.. its regular ear wax... dark brown is because they ate something funny or something they might be allergic too. dry, crusty, scabby is more like a yeast or ear mite/skin infection issue. kibby has wax all the time.. the dr. said its normal with the breed.. i have clean out her gunk once a week otherwise it gets nasty in there!
Our other dog has had yeast infections and you can smell it. If your dogs ears stink, he may need a solution. THe Vet said that all dogs have some yeast in the ears, but it usually stays within balance. James has brown stuff in his ears that we wipe out every day. Doc said that if the ear looks red or stinks theres a problem, otherwise its disgusting, but natural
my Reuben has had it all his life, he is 12, his is basically a brownish waxy gunk.... smells well I guess like gunk, lol, not overpowering, can't smell it unless you stick up against your nose, lol..... and what's weird is it is mostly in one ear, other one gets it too but not as much. If your dogs ear just has brownish wax or whatever and not irritated, red or looks bad then I would leave it, just clean out once in awhile.

I asked our vet the same question...

I don't know about a visual
but if they are itchy and smelly that's an indication to go to the vet to have it tested for yeast vs bacteria.
