So, Rex has one, again, this time on his other ear. The last time he had surgery, which was successful, but we almost lost him because of the anesthesia. So surgery is not an option this time. I've search on the site and see that some people treat it with warm or cold compresses. So which is the best, warm or cold? He already is on prednosone daily for his allergies, his ears are clean and i don't believe there is an infection as he has had these in the past his ears look and smell fine now. I would like to treat at home and am wondering if it is better to do the cold or the warm compresses to see if it helps. Thanks. P.S. It doesnt seem to bother him.

Ear hemotoma...
My now 12-1/2 y/o Beulah had one a couple of years ago. I did nothing. It eventually resorbed. However, it did leave her with a lumpy ear flap. Doesn't bother her, doesn't bother us! If she was a show dog, I'd probably would have had surgery done, but it was unnecessary for her.
Agree w/Micki
Norbert had one when he was about 9 or 10 yrs and we opted to do nothing and the blood did absorb. No compresses. There was a slight difference with his ear flap but I doubt anyone but me would have noticed it.
Hematoma
My boy had one also a few years ago. I had it drained once, but it came back. I did some research on the internet and just left it alone and it went down in about a week or so. DId not do any compresses.
We treated with 10 mg of prednisone daily
For about a week. My Vet no longer does surgery for ear hematomas.
