ear cleaning

What is the best way to clean the ears? I've been just using cotton to wipe them out but there seems to be a lot of wax in there!! Thanks!

We use a liquid ear cleaner...

that the vet gave us but there are a lot in the pet stores.  I think ours is called EpiOtic.  You squeeze a small amount into the ear, smoosh it around below the ear where you can smoosh it together and then let them shake their heads and it all flies out (so best to do it outside).  We wipe the inside area with malaseb on a cotton pad but the liquid get down deeper into the ear canal.

we use a liquid ear cleaner also

as soon as the drawer it's in is opened, Audrey runs and hides in her crate and refuses to come out. She REALLY hates it.

I just got a recipe from

my vet simply rubbing alchohol and vinegar - equal parts.  The rubbing alcohol evaporates off and won't clog the ears like water.

If you have redness or the ears smell - get checked by the vet.

I have a solution I use from a friend of mine.....

16oz Witch Hazel (easier on ear than Alcohol), 4 TBS Boric Acid (from the pharmacy NOT pest section), 16 drops Gentian Violet.  Put all in the Witch Hazel bottle shake up really good. Then transfer to a squeeze bottle and clean out the ears.  Do this OUTSIDE because that Violet will stain EVERYTHING. Fill the ear canal like you would with any cleaner, rub the base of the ears to distribute, allow the dog to shake head and wipe out excess with cotton balls or cotton wipes.   I have been using this in my dogs ears for a while when my Boxer got a horrible infection that even the EpicOtic could not control.  Their ears have no smell, no waxy build up and look FANTASTIC!

Before you use ANYTHING make sure that if there is redness or pain have the ears checked first because you do do more damage.

It might be time to change

It might be time to change his food. They should NOT have dirty ears on a regular basis. Dirty ears (yeast) 'can be' a sign of a food allergy. Not always, but It was for us. :) Since changing foods, we have not had to clean Brody's ears in 3 yrs. Sounds gross, but his ears are squeaky clean...there is no need for it.

I hadn't ever thought about

I hadn't ever thought about the food. She is just now 4 months and has been on the same food all along.Gross but the wax is a brown color and its bad every couple of days. I haven't done the cleaner solution since we got her a month ago. I probably should try to get them completely clean before I check with the vet. Thanks, i'll keep you posted!
