ear canal closing up tightly

I would love to know who has experience with this issue and solved it completely and permanently without ear ablation surgery. This is a new issue with Mr. Higgins and the ear canal is very closed. His ear was fine when checked in October so I am shocked. Vet trialing  steroid drops for now to see if there can be shrinkage, however it remains to be seen if the drops can even get down there where fluid is trapped. He is rather deaf in that ear for now, hopefully not forever. I do not want him to undergo another surgery. The ablation sounds horrendous and he has had 7 surgeries to date, last one in Aug. (ear hematoma) He is 7 years old and has had way too much to put up with in spite of excellent vet care. My poor sweet boy.

Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Experienced same...

First off take your baby to a specialist (Dermatologist). She treated the following way. 2 weeks on steroids to open up ear canal. Then she cultured once inside to find out what kind of infection then medicated drops. I remember having to clean my boys ears every day for two weeks. I followed her instructions to the tee and it all worked out. My boy was 9 years old at the time and now he is 12 with no more issues. I believe the cause of all this was a food allergy. I had him take the blood allergy test and found out he was allergic to Flax seed! I was putting organic flax seed oil in his food not knowing this was causing his ears to close up! I hope this helps! Good Luck!

This happened to my Cocker Spaniel, Friday.

we tried everything.  The only thing that worked on her was Staph Lysate injections.  We started the injections and one ear was 100% openned and the other about 85% openned.

I tell many people about my experiences but I never found that anyone tried it but it worked for us.

Same issue

Kilmore had the same issue.  We took him to a dermatologist and they put him on steriods and specially made ear solution.  He also had to have both his eardrums popped to drain the inner ear, then given the steroids.  He had ear issues and after that he was really good with his ears.  It was allergies that caused most of his issues.  We always to had to adjust when he had something new happen.  It's tough, but if you can find out what works it is worth it.

thanks very much

He is now on a compounded ear solution with steroid in it. ($99 bucks!!) Once a day for a week, then once a week. Hope the stuff can get into the ear canal a bit to do it`s job. A fluid sample has gone to the lab for culture, then the appropriate antibiotic will be given. It will be treated  medically, then to a dermatologist if more intervention is required. OMG not the dreaded ablation surgery. I am not interested in that for him AT ALL. I am just crossing my fingers for now.

I had knee surgery on Tues 29th and yesterday my friend`s car was rear ended while I was a passenger. Just a bit of whiplash. Funny, I am only concerned about Mr. Higgins and not myself. That is what owning a bully is all about.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Did anyone`s bully get their hearing back? I can tell he cannot hear on that side.

Hearing back

Kilmore had his hearing come back.  It took a little bit, but it came back.  Or should I say his selective hearing came back.  His ears were the best they had been after that, so for us and him it was worth it.
