Cheeto has some hard build-up in the ear. We're going to try a food trial and some additional meds first, but the vet thought if this doesn't work an ear ablation might be the next step. He also suggested an allergy test as another option. Does anyone have experience with any of these? I'd like to try all non-surgical options first.
Has the vet tested what is in the ear?
One of our dogs, when we first got him had terrible long term ear infections. Regular cleaning just wasn't getting all the stuff out so my vet took a sample and then did a thorough ear flush. The test showed a bacteria, vet was then able to prescribe the appropriate meds. That along with changing his food solved the problem for the rest of the dog's life.
Good luck

No. I'll suggest that. I think the food trial may be telling.
Thanks.
Go straight to a Dermatologist
My boy's ears were closing and I went straight to a specialist. A dermatologist deals with ear issues in dogs. He was put on steroids to get the canals to open up. Once they were opened he was given antibiotic drops and I had to flush his ears every day for 2 weeks. All in all in took about 2 months for him to be back to normal. No surgery was needed. Found out later he was allergic to flax seed oil. Had a blood allergy panel done. Surgery should be your last resort. It has been almost 2 years. He was 9 year old and now he is 11. We are still dealing with environmental allergies but his ears are still great. Good luck!
Thanks for the tip. Off to the dermatologist we go.
