My bulldog, Moose, drinks alot of water, if I leave his bowl down he will drink until its all gone! I'm wondering if the food I'm feeding him is making him thristy? He gets 1 cup science diet in the morning & evening. I leave his bowl half way full in his pen while I'm at work and when I get home he has finished the bowl & peed all over the floor. I hate to restrict his water but if its down he won't leave it alone. If anyone has a suggestion I would appreciate it...Thanks! by the way moose is 5 months old
I would have him checked by the vet
you never know, perhaps something is going on. You cannot go wrong having him checked, you sure can by not having him checked. My boy had urinary crystals with a UTI at 8 months. He was peeing in his crate all the time in spite of not having any accidents since 4 1/2 months. The food was the culprit causing too acidic a urine. Science Diet is not a high quality food. If your vet deems him healthy, well, bullies do drink a lot sometimes and all at once too.
Personally, I would not restrict water. I am sure you will get some excellent advice from others too. Please have him checked out a.s.a.p.
Best of luck with this and let us know.
BTW
I think 2 feedings a day and 2 cups of food is not enough for a 5 month old. Does he seem hungry?
Yes, he does act like hes
Yes, he does act like hes hungry but I thought it was just him. The side of the food says at his age and weight he should get 2 cups aday, if you think he should get more I would appreciate the advice. The food says there is sodium but doesn't tell me how much per serving. Thanks for the advice I really do appreciate it.
Time for a vet visit for a blood panel, just in case.
Also, check the sodium content on that food. It may be too high. Science Diet isn't one of my favorite foods out there, but if your boy is doing ok on it other than the heavy water intake, I would not take him off it unless the sodium content is high.
How long during the day are you gone? He could go a couple of hours at a time without water in his crate unless your home is kept warm or you live in a warm climate.

Or a urine sample, which is what I meant to say.
Sheesh, it is past my bedtime. I would check for a high salt content, but also see if there is a bladder infection going on. Sorry, my brain is on freeze tonight.

I agree, I think more food....
I am pretty sure we fed 2 cups per feeding up until they were about 10/11 months old so I would increase the food.
Thanks!
It's been about 3 yrs since my other bulldog passed so I wasn't sure how much to feed Moose. I just read the label on the side and it said for his age and weight about 2 cups per day. Thanks so much for your advice I do appreciate it! I think I will increase his food and see if that helps.
Food
Not enough food unless this is a very tiny puppy. How much does he weigh? Kohl was 36 lbs at 4 months and he was eating 5 cups kibble + 3 oz raw pattie daily (split into 3 meals). I've since reduced him to 4 cups kibble, cause I didn't want him to get too fat. He does drink alot of water. Agree with the lack of quality in Science Diet...but any kibble will cause them to drink more. It's amazing how little they drink when they are on solely a raw diet.
weight
at 4 months he weighted 20 pounds. Today I started giving him 2 cups in the morning & at dinner, it was the first time he walked away like he was full! Thanks alot for the advice.
