desitin question

Hi everyone,

I'm forever dealing with tail pocket issues. We are moving back to the USA in 1 month, i'm going to see a couple vets to gather up some opinions of what to do next. Until then I just need to give my poor girl some relief!!

Last week I used the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it method" this worked for about 1 week. After that she started spinning around. When I checked out in there (in there being the 2.5 inch pocket) it wasn't too bad or gross. I cleaned it and then put some desitin in there. She didn't seem bothered for around 4 days. This am I wiped it out and put more desitin in there. She doesn't seem in pain but she will spin and just sit in the same place for hours if it is bothering her.

My main question is how long can that desitin stay in there??? I feel terrible for her but I think i've tried it all!! After I clean it out seems seems worse off then before I do it!!

Thanks!

Lisa

Newman has been doing the same thing lately...

his tail pocket isn't gunky but he's bothered by it.  I clean it out with peroxide or malaseb spray on a cotton pad and then dry with another pad. Then I use a ketchup squirter (with a pointy end) to squirt gold bond powder in there.  Seems to keep him happy for three or four days and then we start all over again.  Every other week he gets a shower and I clean it out really good with Malaseb shampoo and a hand held shower head.

Glad to know i'm not the only

Glad to know i'm not the only one! I don't have any of that malaseb spray, i'll have to get that when I get back to the USA. When I took her to the vet here in China last time they told me to get the surgery done and that it was simple...I know that isn't true, that would be an absolute last resort!!!!

Gemma gets a bath every week and I tell them to get her pocket dry.

I used the desitin this am and she seemed bothered but now it is a few hours later and she is ok.

Desitin

That stuff is thick and sticky.  I have never liked using desitin.  I would clean it and use an astringent that doesn't sting (or a vagisil wipe) and dry it with a dry cotton ball or paper towell  and not put anything in it.  Sometimes I thing we just clean with stuff too much and less is more.  I love Genticin and use it sprayed on a cosmetic pad for all of my under the tail cleanings.  But I rarely have to clean under the tails because none of my dogs have pockets.  I wonder if just vinegar and water would work since I know it is hard for you to find stuff over there.

I agree, less is more but in

I agree, less is more but in this situation this seems to be the only thing that gives her relief. I try not to use too much..I hate to even get it on myself!! I put my finger in the pocket this am and it seemed normal, it is SO tight in there. Mostly it seemed like some hair clumps but no blood like I have found before.

I do have gold bond powder and they makes her go nuts and doesn't seem to help. I can't wait to get a vets opinion when I get back!!!!

Thanks for the advice :)

sort of related question...

How are you two doing with your prep work to come back to the US?  Have you followed the advice about having her spend time in her traveling crate and being around loud noises??  I think about the trip you two have coming up pretty regularly and keep sending good thoughts your way.

How did you and Gemma come to be together over there?  Did you bring her with you when you moved or did you get her while you were over in China?

HI Shannon,Yes, i'm trying to

HI Shannon,

Yes, i'm trying to prepare everything! I picked up her crate yesterday but i'm thinking it may be too small. She doesn't have much room to turn around, I know I don't want it too big but I also want her to be comfortable (as much as she can be) I will ask the relocation company their opinion but I think I will probably go with the big size. As far as loud noises go..we have fireworks all the time here, probably several times a week. She is used to that so she shouldn't be scared. I did find out that she needs at least 3 hours to clear customs, we only have 1.5 hours between flights in Newark so she will have to stay in a pet hotel there overnight. I'm a little worried about that but less than I would be if she had to stay over in China. They will take her out, walk her, etc. I've hired door to door service so I hope she is well taken care of.

Kind of a long story about getting her. We have been in china almost 6 years and our kids really wanted a dog..they needed some normal American things in their lives so we decided to take the plunge! We didn't know much about bulldogs and after a lot of research we decided that was the right dog for our family. We started to look online and went to several places that were terrible, dirty and everything else you could think of. the places told us they had the puppies, when we got there they didn't have anything just cute pictures. It was all a hoax, i've had many friends here get dogs and then they die within a week. Somehow we came across our breeder. He is American and his story is similiar, he wanted to get a bulldog for his family and couldn't find one that was healthy so he shipped several from the USA and started breeding here. I think most of his dogs are show quality but he sells some for pets too. He was very surprised when I told him about the epilepsy..he said he didn't have any dogs that he knew about having that. So, yes she has been a challenge but also a great blessing for our family!!! The breeder took a couple back to the USA last year and didn't have any problems so i'm hoping for the same thing.

Thanks for thinking of us! I'll just be glad to get the whole process over with so Gemma can start her life in Ohio! :)

Thanks Shannon, yes I will

Thanks Shannon, yes I will keep everyone posted on the trip! I talked to the pet hotel yesterday and they put me a little at ease about the care they would give her during her overnight stay.

Onslow is doing that recently and he has never done it before!

I think he might need his anal glands expressed for the first time ever!  I don't see anything wrong with his tail or bumhole so we are going to try that and see if that fixes the problem!

oh man...

first time ever??  Lucky ducks...Winston "decided" to develop that problem last fall right after I had shoulder surgery and was down to my left arm (which, of course, isn't my dominant arm/hand).  I could tell he was really REALLY miserable and it was thanksgiving weekend so no vet or groomer were open or had time to help (and I wasn't paying to go to the emergency vet for this issue), so I watched a couple "how to" videos and helped my dude out...good lord was it gross (I gagged super hard), but once it was all said and done I could tell he felt a million times better.

So...long story short, it's gross, but it's pretty simple to "fix."  It can be done even one handed. :)

PS-Don't be such stranger!

It is gross!! I get Gemma's

It is gross!! I get Gemma's done every other week, the vet here does it for free when I take her to the groomer. Maybe on the last day before we leave I should tell him to charge for the service!! I don't think he is learned how much people will pay when they love their pets!! :)

My girl is really going crazy

My girl is really going crazy today!! I don't know what to do. We put gold bond in the pocket last night and she went nuts! This am she still wasn't back to normal, I tried to powder her up again..it did feel a little damp. I hate to see her like this :( :(

onslowsmom's picture

You are a WAY BRAVER woman then me!

I'm booking a vet appt because I don't want to do it. I'm going to pretend I don't know what is wrong. hahahahahaha

Re: Where?

I'm north of Brookville, OH, about 20 miles east of the Ohio/Indiana border, out among woodlots, cornfields, nurseries and hog farms.

Near to Ashland is one of my favorite places in Ohio; the Mid-Ohio racetrack. It is just beautiful and a super track for sportscars and motorcycles.

Yes!! Mid Ohio is 15 mins from me! If you ever get a chance do a tour of the Mansfield Reformatory, Shawshank was filmed there. It is so interesting!!
What a small world :)
