Mr. Higgins loved his new deer antler but yesterday I noticed one of his small upper teeth was broken off at the gumline. I called my vet and he said since it was a small tooth, just watch for bleeding and infection. I feel so bad because I did not know this would happen. Vet said he would have pain, however he is eating fine. He said I could put baby oragel on it, but being a stoic breed, how would I know if he has pain or not? Vet did say the root is most likely still there, but only x-rays would show that, which I am not fond of. He says I do not need to bring him in.
I freak out at the littlest thing as we all do. My poor boy.
Anyone using deer antlers or had a tooth break completely off at the gumline?
Oh! Mr. Higgins poor boy
I hope he is ok and maybe the next time he goes to the vet have him check it and make sure it will be ok to leave it like that.
Give Mr. Higgins a bug hug for me. I just love his name

So sorry to hear about your baby's poor tooth
I know how stressful this must be.
FYI...My father had actually mentioned getting one for Tuffy and I'd worried about teeth chipping on it. Now I've been officially forewarned!!
Oh man.
No we don't use the antlers. I hope the root is undamaged. =(
thanks for the responses, now not sure
I am a bit confused, most likely I know little about dental. If the root is there, and exposed, and he has pain, how would it be o.k. to just leave it? I sure would have pain if I broke a tooth off and the root was exposed. My dentist would have me in there immediately.
I have the best vet in the world, tons of experience with bullies. He and his secretary tell me they usually do a root canal in cases like this. How different would it be just because it is a small tooth? Vet says o.k. to leave it.
I am sort of contemplating taking him is for dental cleaning (tartar, he will be 6 in 10 days) and they could do something with the root, but the anaesthesia scares me since his airway got bad again. Airway surg 2 years ago, seems like palate grew back or scar tissue because his tongue will go blue occasionally just from excitement, as before airway fix.
Oh, what to do.
If there is no outward sign of pain, leave it alone for now.
Use the baby orajel or whatever your vet mentioned, but leave it alone for now. No sense putting him through sedation for it, it will be fine if you keep an eye on it.

poor mr. higgins
love that name!!!! Rex has a broken tooth. One of the molars in the back. we didnt even know it was broken until his annual check up. It doesnt seem to bother him at all. he eats, plays, acts goofy, chews his toys. I would say if mr. higgins is doing his usual things, it isnt bothering him. We think Rex broke his tooth on a cow bone, which we do not give anymore. they are too hard. he never shredded them, but he did try to chomp on them with his back teeth. good luck.

If he's eating and drinking OK
Just keep an eye on that area for swelling or other signs of infection. The retained root can cause an issue.
Kano broke off a tooth years ago and had no problem. Hope you have the same luck!

I am relieved now
that other bullies have broken teeth off too and no big deal. I am grateful for the responses I have received. Eating well is not a factor, I think, since they don`t even chew their food!! he he
