could someone educate me on the female anatomy

Its been quite awhile since we posted on this wonderful board.  I have a question, and it may seem odd, but since we don't have the female gender in our family, we get a little confused with this.  We recently lossed our 8 yrs old Stella.  We got her spayed when she was young, and never had to deal with her "female issues".  We decided that the next time we add another addition to our family, which happens to be a female, we would not spay her and hopefully if things turn out well,  we would  find a "coach" to help us along with a one time pregnancy with her.

My question is, and I do apologize for being a little "blunt", but when does a female English bulldog have her cycle, and how do you know when she is having her cycle?  and when she is in heat, how does she act?  Do they discharge alot, or??? and how long does the cycle last for?  If someone could give me some pointers, I would greatly appreciate it...I tried reading on the internet, and well, it was a little confusing..

Female cycles....

I don't know if this will help you very much, but at least you will realize that many situations can be normal.  From my experience, first Bulldog cycles began between 9 and 18 months with subsequent heats occurring 7, 13 or 18 months apart!!!  So there can be huge differences that are still normal.    You might notice the vulva swelling as much as a month before the heat begins, and if you have an intact male or have contact with one, they may show some interest that early.  Bleeding can be slight spotting to some dripping that requires a panty or confinement to easily mopped area.  The heat cycle is supposed to last about 3 weeks, but she doesn't necessarily bleed for the entire time--there can be a wide variation, and you should not allow contact with an intact male during this time.  Some girls can act differently during this time, quieter or bitchier, but some don't act like they know that anything is different.  Good luck and feel free to contact me.

Also,

So sorry....you have my sincere sympathy on the loss of your Stella.
