My almost 11 year old Chloe has been gagging when eating, bringing up dense white foam, sleeps pretty much all the time, no longer wants to go for walks, showing cynotic tongue and gums when over excited. Today we went to the vet. They did x rays and blood work. The x rays showed some fluid in the lungs and the heart a bit rounder, which I believe is not that uncommon for a bulldog. She gave Chloe a shot of lasix and antibiotics and we are to return in the morning for blood work results and to consider our next move. I really felt she suspects early signs of CHF. I have no knowledge of this condition other than reading about it on the net and am wondering if anyone has had some experience with this condition and how you treated it. Any info would be really helpful at this point.
my great dane
passed from heart failure...i decided since he was 10 years old to let nature take its course i made sure he was comfortable and he was happy...and he passed about 6 months latter in his sleep...
their are excellant drugs out their...and if he had been younger i would of pushed...even with all the great drugs old age is old age..talk with your vet..you can proably go another year together....
chf is not painful as you said just a slowing down of normal activities.....let us know what your vet suggest....
CHF
I had a bully girl that had pulmonic stenosis (hereditary heart defect) and when she was 3 years old she went into congestive heart failure. She lived another 9 months after being diagnosed with CHF. She was on several different types of meds. Of course lasix was one of them but the med that did her the most good was vetmedin (it was kinda expensive but well worth it because it gave her more energy). Good luck with your baby!
We have had 3 Bulldogs with CHF
Lasix helps alot with fluid retention. The vet also prescribed a heart med but I can't remember the name, sorry. All lived 6 to 9 months relatively symptom free until their hearts began to fail quickly.
Lynn King CPDT-KA
My boxer has an enlarged heart - don't know if its the same but
he takes enipril everyday. He was diagnosed at age 5 and I am happy to say he is going to be 11 in september!!!!! Occasionally he gets to coughin and I have the lasik pills to give him then, but hasn't been in a long time. Good Luck. He also gets baby aspirin everyday.
Thank you
for taking the time to respond. We should know more tomorrow and will perhaps have a tentative plan in place. Will let you know how we make out.
Enalapril and Vetmedin are the two heart drugs.....
Vetmedin is awesome! I hear great things about this drug! It came too late to help my Floyd who had CHF but it made his last few weeks with us very comfortable!
Best of luck!
