congestive heart failure

Dash, my 10 year old is suffering from congestive heart failure.  He started off 2 months ago losing weight and collapsed a couple of times when eating.  We were referred to LSU vet school where he was diagnosed with a heart tumor and leaky valves.  This week he started collapsing everytime he ate or drank.  I raised his bowl which helped.  We can't scope his throat because we don't think he would make it until he's stronger.  Anyone had  a similar experience.

Do you let your other dogs

Do you let your other dogs see him? The other 3 knew he was sick and now know things are wrong.

That is up to you

and what you want to do.  You decide what you think is best for your family.  Nobody is going to judge you either way no matter what.

XOXOXO

So Sorry

Sorry about your boy, always a tough call, but only the person that is with a dog every day can know what the right thing to do is.

To your question about letting the other dogs in the house see him - I have always let the other animals in my house (dogs, cats, rabbit, bird) see the one that has passed. I think it gives them some kind of closure too.

So very sorry, my deepest condolences to you...

It is devastating to see them decline in that manner....he is now free from pain over the Rainbow Bridge somewhere...being happy and lazing in the green, green grass:-)

Hugs to you....we are here for you at any time.

Robin, I just lost my Lily, 11.5 years old to CHF...

She was diagnosed almost 1.5 years ago with very similar symptoms as you discribe.  We did all the tests and she was put on a coctail of medications, most important is: Pimobendan, Lasix, enalapril, eventualy digoxin, Spirolactone...you name it.  As disease progressed he abdominal cavity filled with fluid and we were taking her to the vet for draining, it sounds worse than it is, my Lily eventualy got used to is and treated it like a trip to a spa.  At the beginning we did it every 6 weeks, eventually it progressed for many, many months where it was done weekly.  but we had her for 1.5 years after diagnosis.  She had better and worse days, eventually she passed, we were with her, on her own, as she got very weak and did not want to eat any more--result of all these medications takes a toll on them.  She was my baby, we did all we could to have her with us for as long as we could and i miss her each moment of the day.  Try to be positive and see what treatments are available at each stage of the disease.  e-mail me if you need more answers slaterbernata@fhda.edu

Hugs, it is never easy.  Stay strong.
