concerned!

Hi All--this isn't a huge medical crisis, but I am really concerned about Winston today.

Over lunch today I ran home and took Winston on a walk to get the mail and to do his business.  Everything was fine while we were out, he got to say "Hi" to one of my neighbors, we got the mail, he did his thing and we went back in.  I went in to the restroom to wash my hands and I hear him scratching himself and before I can dry off my hands he's almost "scream/crying" while still scratching his face.  It scared the holy crap out of me.  I ran out there to see the right side of his face scratched to the point of bleeding in 4/5 places, seriously...he had about 30 seconds to do that and his nails were just dremeled last week so they're not long.

Poor baby, I cleaned him up, applied some mupirocin ointment to the fold and cuts and gave him a couple Benadryl’s (at the rate per pound recommended by my vet for allergy flare ups).  But I'm worried he had something else going on.  Any ideas?  He didn't get in to anything on our walk, or rub against anything so I'm at a complete loss as to what would have caused him to do that to himself.  He's on a daily allergy medicine per our vet, and hasn't had any flare ups recently and he's never EVER done this before...  His breathing was fine before, during and after the whole ordeal and I sat with him almost 30 minutes (my whole lunch) to make sure he didn't scratch more.

Here are 2 pictures of him after I've cleaned him up and gotten the ointment on him.  Insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Poor guy

its hard to tell but I would think something outside got to him if he was fine before that.  If he keeps it up call the vet tomorrow otherwise keep with the benadryl and watch him.  :(

I agree, maybe some ant bites or something?

Looks like an allergic reaction to something.  I'm sure the benedryl will help.

Looks like it might be bites of some sort

However I don't really know since I've never experienced this with Fatboy.   I can say though that sometimes my husband and I get bit by (what we think are) little spiders.  It drives us crazy when we feel that itchiness though.  I scratched myself to the point where my skin is still healing from a week ago.  Ants can do this to us too.  I think having ants in the house is worse than having spiders.  Just thinking about it is making me itchy.  So maybe he sat on a spot where ants were all over the place when you took him out for a walk.  Fatboy used to bring them into the house all the time just by sitting on the ground.

Bug Bite

I bet he got bit by a bug or do you having any nettles?  Poor guy, maybe some calomine lotion or Cortison cream would calm it.

Thanks!

When I got home yesterday evening he was still a bit "puffy" and sore looking, but acted as if nothing unusual had occured at lunch time.  This morning he was almost back to normal...he'll probably have some scabs from his scratching, but the whole area looks better.

He'll be getting a bath tonight just to be sure I'm not missing anything and help remove anything that might still be irritating.

I would say

That he 100% scratched his face either with his own paw some how or by another method
