Collar after surgery???

The vet told me I had to leave that terrible, huge plastic collar on her for 8 days. As far as I see it is IMPOSSIBLE for her short neck to reach her stomach to lick the stitches. I also say that because her belly is usually always dirty! Did anyone else not use this after surgery??

Collar - probably not necessary
I just had a girl spayed and the collar was not necessary. If she does lick at it, which like you say is difficult for bullies, you can always have her wear a t-shirt to cover the incision.

We brought one home for Beatrix, but never had to use it -- she utterly ignored her incision. Our vet told us that in general, females are more likely to ignore it than males, and thus less likely to need a collar. But our kitten wouldn't leave hers alone after she got spayed, and wound up with a staph infection (not sure which was the cause and which was the result -- did she lick it and infect it? Or did she worry at it because it was infected, and irritating her?) and so I wasn't taking any chances, and brought one home for Beatrix.
If she really does need it, you might just take it off her when she eats, and make sure she has her meals supervised, and then put the collar back on when she's done.
Rocco had one
I had Rocco wearing one for awhile ater he got neutered but he had eye surgery at the same time so the vet recommended it for his eyes but said he wouldnt really need it for his neuter...I would stay away from it you can, Rocco got a really bad acne breakout because of the thing is now on anti biotics
