Clayton just turned 11 weeks old. We got him 6/23/10 from a breeder in Ga he was flown here with a pet nanny. I noticed a little bit of congestion when we got him and the breeder recommended giving benadryl. At his first vet visit I told my vet about it and after listening to him she decided to put him on clavamox for a week. We go back on wednesday for a follow up but I do not notice any improvement. He shows no signs of not feeling well besides the congestion that sounds worse at night. His appetite is 100 % and he is quite playful. I searched the forum archives and read that clavamox may not help and I should ask for Doxicycline?? The breeder thought maybe the stress of flying was also a factor. I would love to hear any thoughts Thank you
I wish I could help. Doing a search
was good. I'm sure you will soon get some good advice. Week-ends are sometimes slow.
Your bullies are darling!
I'll be anxious to hear how Clayton does.
NO Doxicycline for a Puppy!!
We are having the same issues with one of our pups, and I know 2 others with pups going thru this too, and nothing seems to be working for us either, but you can NOT give Doxicycline to a puppy because of their teeth, it will ruin them. Please let me know if you do find something that works. My girl is also on Clavamox and a "cough dex" as well and nothing is stopping the little congested cough. Did you recently get the "kennel cough" shot for your pup?
Clayton just turned 11 weeks old...
So he has not had his kennel cough yet. My vet only prescribed clavamox for 7 days... because of his age she hated to even give any antibiotic. I read in and old post that some people feel clavamox does nothing for pets or humans, that is where they recommended the doxicycline but I did not know that it would be bad for their teeth. Thanks for the heads up. We go back to the vet Wed. I guess I was worried that it would turn into pneumonia! Should I be worried for my older dog Cooper? He has had his bordatella but is also going on Wed for his yearly shots etc. ?

I have 6 other dogs and none of them have any of these symptoms, so I would not be concerned about Cooper. One of the littermates to my pup either inhaled water or threwup alittle and it got in her lungs so she is on different meds and a nebulizer. I have also been using the "plug in Vicks" things that help put the vicks medication in the room. I don't know about clavamox not working, but I assume every dog is different and it might work for some and not for others. Just wish this would go away. Have you tried giving him a little squirt of lemon juice to cut through the phlem? I have tried and it did not seem to do much for my pup. It's very frustrating and I know exactly what you are going thru. Let me know when you go to the vet on Wednesday if you get more or different meds. I have a call into my vet to see what else I can do such as a cough syrup with an expectorant in it like you would give children. I will keep you posted on my baby. Good luck with yours.
Thank You !
I was actually thinking about trying a squirt of lemon.... I will definitely keep you posted! Thanks again & Good luck with your babies also!!!
