Chicken Bone Caution

Well I will now make a caution to those of you feeding raw chicken and bone...be very careful.  Seems not all dogs can digest the bone.  MacKenzie may have to have surgery to remove the bone that is in his colon. There is a mass that is larger then a racket ball lodged in an upper colon I believe that is called the traverse colon. Chunks of bone showed in the xray.  Unfortunately I tried my hand at feeding chunks of bone (what a huge mistake) and I could have and may still have killed my dog by doing so.  What I thought was the right thing to do was most definitely not.  I will go back to grinding my chicken myself so it has no bone chunks and not feeding bone that isn't ground.  So far it has been an expensive lesson and I hear my mother from heaven scoulding me for feeding chicken bones and my vet as well.  His first question was do you feed bone?  Well as of 2 weeks ago I didn't feed bone that wasn't ground up. Then I purchased course ground chicken and look what happened.  Right now we are at about 1k, MacKenzie is in pain in the hospital, with an IV and they are concerned if he passes the bone it could lacerate his colon.  So they may have to do surgery to remove the mass.  That will be another 2k.  I have put my dog in this place...by feeding him bone and I feel very stupid for "giving it a try" and possibly killing my dog.

No more bone for me.

What I would like to know is why he didn't digest it in the stomach before it all got passed through his intestines, before hitting his colon and then impacting.  Maybe he is too far decended from the wolves to have the digestive system necessary.  I don't know I'm just sick and pissed that I did this because I thought feeding him raw would be good for him.

FYI...he has never had white poop, they were brown and firm but not white.

CathyandAudrey's picture

Oh no!

That is awful! I would be terribly upset too.

If it's a mass bigger than a raquet ball, is there something more than bone in there? That would be a LOT of bone. Maybe he didn't digest it because there was something already in there.

I am nervous about chicken, Audrey handles lamb ribs the best, and even those we watch her constantly. Please don't be too hard on yourself, dogs eat bones all the time. You can never tell when an accident or just horrible incident is going to happen. Just think of all the dogs you've heard of that choked on kibble.

Also maybe dogs digest ground food differently than whole food?  Since dogs don't masticate, they just crunch enough to get swallowable pieces, and the ground is already swallowable sized, maybe the stomach 'juices' don't have as much time to get ready?

I don't know- just trying to think of possibilities. I know we stopped grinding Audrey's food, now it's cut into chunks, and for bone for the past month or so she's been eating pigs' feet. Nasty looking but it takes her a L O N G time to eat them, like 2 days.

I would NOT feed chicken bones either if I were you! One scare is one too many.

God I hope Mackenzie is OK!

That's sad

I'm feeding chicken quarters, and I chop the thighs with a hatchet and then cut them in half and tell them to chew it up. They seem to enjoy the chewing action also.

I was grinding, but I got on a site that says it's not needed, and so far so good. That's been for months.

We all hope for the best for your dog.

Thinking of you and Mackenzie

I will send good thoughts and hugs to you and Mackenzie.  I am so sorry to hear this.  Are they going to try to see if it passes or do the surgery and remove it right away?  I will be thinking of you both.

onslowsmom's picture

oh no, poor MacKenzie

I also hope he is going to be ok.  Don't be too hard on yourself Deb.  I know a lot of breeders that feed raw and have for years, they swear by it.....(I've always been leary).  I'm sorry this happened to you.  :(

Keep us posted on him please.

He could use those prayers

He has passed 2 large poops (Kiwi sized) BUT the mass in the upper colon is still there. It seems to have moved some but no real way to tell without doing another xray.  They have him on IV to keep him real hydrated and are feeding him some canned food to try and help move it along.  He is in pain so they are giving him some pain meds. Last night he was getting some blood in his stool which isn't good, so the colon is pretty irritated at this stage.  They had to work hard on breaking up the stuff in the lower colon.

Dr J is not wanting to do surgery if at all possible, but time is counting down.  I guess opening up the colon is much more risky then the intestine and is a much longer healing process.

He's not out of the woods yet.

I'm just sick :(

Thanks for the update

sending tons of good thoughts for MacKenzie.

Wow it's been so long since I've heard that name :).  I hope he lives up to it.  Thanks Sandy for popping in :)   Love this boy!

Prayers for both of you

I pray that this breaks loose without causing any further damage, and that your baby does not need surgery.  Deb, you thought you were doing what was GOOD for your pup, you were not being careless or harmful, please try to not beat yourself up.  Your intentions were good.

Thanks so much guys

keep those prayers coming. He is staying another night at the vets.  The mass has moved some and they are working hard on trying to get it far enough down into the lower colon so they can reach it with the enema catheter to break it up.  The biggest concern now is it possibly cutting off the blood flow to the  colon.  They were going to use some air to try and move it.  They are forcing alot of liquids into him and taking him out every 2 hours for walks.  He is more comfortable this evening, not so lethargic and more relaxed, no more anal bleeding.  Keeping fingers crossed for more movement and no surgery.

Lonna with Harley and Raven's picture

Glad to hear he is a bit better. Will definitely be keeping

our fingers and toes crossed for no surgery for him.  Very scary but sounds like he is in excellent hands and they are monitoring him carefully.

Chicken

Sorry you experienced (and are experiencing this) I hope he is ok.  I did want to mention there is so much information out there and some of it not fact based when it comes to raw feeding.  Feeding raw chicken bones is completely safe, the issue arises when people "grind" or make them smaller.  The dog then eats/swallows the small chunks whole and can cause blockages.  When feeding raw chicken you are best to feed full carcasses or completely ground (nothing in between).  My bully has been eating full backs etc. since she was 10 weeks old and I've never had any issues.  SHe naturally chews them down enough to swallow which in turn makes them easy to pass.  The only time she had a blockage was the one time I fed her a smoked beef bone :(  Big mistake...She went through alot of fluids, walking etc. at the vets before she finally passed (very painful) so I know what you are going through.  Hang in there.....

Deb and MacKenzie and Ester's picture

Hum ..

You could be right...but I find it hard to believe that a whole bone is ground so much from a dog chewing that there is no chunk of bone that hits the stomach.  Especially when dogs don't really chew their food, they typically glup it.  So while your dog is breaking or crunching on the bone, what enters the stomach is still chunks of bone.

CathyandAudrey's picture

I agree Deb

A dog eating whole bones will absolutely swallow them in pieces. That's why I wonder if the process of chewing them has anything to do with the digestive juices being more abundant to process them.

Either way, Mackenzie is one dog that clearly can not process unground bone pieces-what a SCARY horrible thing!

I am so very happy to hear he is out of danger....

Final Update -- Your Prayers

have done it a gain and he is likely out of the woods.  He will be very sore for a few days while the colon heals. The mass moved enough overnight that my vet was able to sedate him and do another red rubber catheter enema and break up the remaining mass, which was mostly bone a little smaller then a tennis ball . It took 1 1/2 hours.  He will likely stay overnight one more night because he will be draining a lot of fluid and Dr. J said it is pretty messy. So he should get to come home tomorrow morning.

Thank you all for providing those much needed prayers.  I'm truly greatfull!

He will be on canned food...maybe the rest of his life...!   I definitely won't be feeding any chicken bones again, fully ground or none at all.

Shannon and Winston's picture

what great news!

I'm so happy to hear that everything has worked out (literally and figuratively)!!  I bet your boy will be SO happy to come home to you and I'm sure he'll be ready to be spoiled by his mom!

Oh, my goodness!

Deb - I'm so sorry to read about MacKenzie!  Having (unfortunately) gone thru 3 bowel obstructions, I know what you were going thru.

It's wierd that the bone passed so far along... I wonder if something else increased the motility of the bowel and pushed things further along where proper digestion couldn't take place?  Or, something that decreased the acidity of the stomach?  I always think about Deb's Newman when he swallowed that huge bone and it digested in the stomach and upper small intestine...

Anyway, Thank Goodness MacKenzie is OK!  Don't beat yourself up.  You did what you thought was a good thing for your dog.  Who knew that he was going to be one of those "one in a million" that would have issues with this?  That said, I don't blame you for not ever going that route with him, again!

Great news, I can only

Great news, I can only imagine how emotionally exhausted you are right now, it will take YOU a couple days to recoop too!  Prayers really work, thank God!

I got to reading cans at the pet store, even high quality canned food seems like it could easily have bones ground up in it.  Just wondering out loud......
