Cherry Eye - back and forth

I get so much useful information on this site so here we go again ... our little guy had cherry eye about 2 weeks ago.  We were able to massage it back in but still went to the vet.  The vet said that's the best when it can be massaged back in but gave us some ointment to use anyway.  Almost every time I used the ointment (2x a day) the cherry eye would appear again but easily be massaged back in.  Stopped using the ointment and no cherry eye for a few days and now it's popped out again only the other eye!  Poor guy.  I can always tell when it's going to happen because he rubs his face on the rug and then looks at me with that pitiful cherry eye popping out :(  The vet explained that there is a gland behind that third eyelid and it may be irritated.  Of course I didn't ask too many questions when we were there because I was just so happy that he didn't have to have surgery since that's what I read so now I am freaking out that maybe there is more of a problem.  Before I spend more $ on the vet wondering if this is something others have dealt with.  Can this be allergies and if so, how do they test for that.  I guess I just need to know if I should take him back to the vet and what questions I should be asking.  Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated by all of us.  Thanks in advance you all are great sources of information.

Cherry eye

Rubbing the eye and sometimes excitement can cause the cherry to pop when they're little like that.  If you can get the cherry to stay in more than it is out, then you probably can avoid surgery, and eventually it will just stay in.  Be patient and continue applying the antibiotic ointment with cortisone.   Good luck!

cherry eye troubleshooting

Our vet told us over the phone to do a little trouble shooting.  First he explained how to massage it back in, which work for a few days.  He said if it was out more of the time than back in we needed to bring her in for a consult.  He also had us do 2 days of benedryl, since it was early spring and there was alot of grass pollens out at the time, he thought it might be more manageable ...but it seems hers was not allergy caused.

Our vet did the sedation, instead of putting her all the way under, we had her back in our arms in 2 hours, and she was back to normal within another 3 hours.  It cost us $130 and we did the removal.  The vet said he does ALOT of tacks...as in re-tacks, and he did not suggest it.  He also said it was VERY common for 6-9 month old pups.

THANKS for the info

The little guys eye is definately in more than out.  It's only out maybe once or twice a day for a second before I massage that baby back in.  Good to hear it's common in 6-9 month olds because we are 7 months right now.  It goes right in after massage so that's good.  I have heard about benadryl and gave it to him once and I thought it made him more sleepy (if that is even possible!) but maybe I will do that again.  I do know they said just plain benadryl in pill form because the liquid has sucrose, asparatame and xylitol and are toxic to dogs.  Thanks to everyone for the information I so appreciate it.  My kids are 18 and 20 and this this is my new little baby!

It may subside overtime if you just continue to massage it back.

My old guy Mackenzie when he rubs always pops what would be considered a little cherry eye and I can always massage it back in.  He is almost 9 so if you can manage it I would try that first.
