Can't clean himself
Submitted by Docsmama on August 22, 2011 - 3:11pmMy 11 month old male has never been able to bend over and clean himself like dogs and cats do. He is only able to lick his legs and paws. He also has a tail pocket that sends him scooting his butt across the floor and racing from one area to another turning around as if to see. He cant get to it. We clean it and try to keep it dry. I know there is always a little moisture and heat of course. It isn't sore or infected, I can \fit my finger around the end of his spine, his tail in his pocket it is really tight though. There is also a dimple on the top of his back where it seems almost like it would have been part of this tail inversion. I sometimes wonder if this isnt' why he can't bend around like other dogs and bend over to lick and clean himself. I know he will never get to his tail pocket but our other bullies were able to clean themselves and most other dogs and cats can clean too.
Anyone else's bully not able to do routine self cleaning?

I have never had a bullie that could clean themself,
I don't think many of them can bend enough to clean themselves. I have to do all of the cleaning for them. You can put gold bond powder in the tail pocket after cleaning and drying it, the powder will help control the moisture.

Thnak you for your help! I just bought gold bond powder last night. I hope it isn"t too uncomfortable for him. I remember that can have a little stinging sometimes.

I don't think they can
they seem to look for us to do every thing. remember these dogs are not like other dogs. they get to parts that need clean

they physically are not able to clean themselves...
bullys are shaped like balls with short legs! there is no way they can bend like other dogs or cats, thats why they are so high maintenance! i wash my bully every 2-3 weeks, with a warm towel body wipe down at least every 3-4 days in between, i wipe her face and chin after every meal, clean ears every week, wipe off feet and in between toes everyday, i use babywipe on her buthole after every poo! i have never had a dog like this, they are like babies- so cute and helpless and need us to keep them clean and healthy!

Aw! thank you for responding. My bulldog as a child, we never did any of that. He did clean himself. As a kid I guess you see things differently than the lady cleanning the house and being the mama. It sounds like to take excellent care of your dogs! I try and bathe Doc every other week. I do clean his face and heiney several times a day....every potty and from morning eye boogies to breakfast, lunch and dinner wiping his mouth (and any snacks and drinks). They really are like babies!

I have never seen a bulldog
that can clean themselves. Which I think is a good thing because I like their kisses. They physically can't bend around to do it. :)
