Oliver just started antibiotics (cephalexin) the other day and has had diarrhea ever since. Is this a normal side effect? Should we call the vet and see if a different antibiotic would work? Pumpkin never seems to really work when he gets diarrhea, he has a pretty sensitive system. Anything else we could try?
Absolutely can...
I would see if they can give you a different antibiotic. Meanwhile, you can give him immodium to help control the diarhea.
What is he on antibiotics for?

Eye - tell me your thoughts....
Well, I didn't bring him to our usual bulldog vet because he is an hour away and I figured this wasn't a bulldog specific issue. However now I am kind of wishing I would have. So here is what is going on....one of Oliver's eye's is a bit cloudy. I can only see it when the sun hits it in the right spot, and I can also see a bit of an indentation, just a small spot. His eye does not seem to bother him, he does not paw at it nor does he squint. So my first thought was that this could be the beginning of an ulcer. So I just brought him to a vet close to my house. She did the dye test and there wasn't much uptake of the dye. She gave us some antibiotic eye drops to try to see if it was just an infection from maybe a poke in the eye or something. She called and wanted to re-check it so we brought him back. She again did the dye test and there really wasn't any change in the eye, still a bit cloudy and still can see an indentation. She thought maybe the eyedrop antibiotics weren't getting it so she prescribed cephalexin. He has only been on the cephalexin for a few days but of course now he also has diarrhea.
Cont'd...
Sorry, I forgot the rest of my questions. So any ideas as to what could be the issue with his eye? Ulcer? Scratch? Should I bring him to my bulldog vet? To an eye specialist? He is only 2.5 years old, too young for an ulcer? Any other ideas?
It could be an ulcer forming but...
I'm not sure what the Cephalexin will do. And you have to be careful not to use steroid eye drops for an ulcer, it will make it worse. I would think that any good vet would know how to treat an eye problem, but if it were one of my guys, I would call my bulldog vet and ask them what they think you should do. We have the same problem here, our bulldog vet is 40 minutes away and we have a large vet practice practically next door. So we do vaccines and routine things there and go to the bulldog vet for any problems that come up.
Off to the bulldog vet we go....
I guess you live and learn. I had an appt. with our bulldog vet but just wanted someone to look at it quickly so I had cancelled it. I will get in with them to see what he thinks. I think her thinking with the cephalexin was that if it was an infection from something that got in his eye it would take care of that. Thanks Kathy!!
Yes
I would give the ab's with food and you can give a 10 mg pepcid once a day.
It is an antibiotic drop...
I freaked out there for a minute, it is an antibiotic eye drop, not a steroid eye drop. I have a call in to our bully vet so I will hear from him on Monday.
That's good that there is no steroid in the drops...
Our girl Oreo scratched her cornea years ago and the vet gave me steroid drops which I used every day. After a while her eye started to look cloudy and she started squinting and when I took her back, she had developed an ulcer and the steroid drops had made it a hundred times worse. Hope he recovers quickly!
