Calcium/phosperous level question

I was revisting going back to C. Natural due to some recent skin issues that have come up but upon closer observation I see that their Lamb and Rice ALS formula has Calcium levels of 2.14 and Phospherous level of around 1.33 (although the grain free formula has a Phospherous of 1.16.) It was my understanding that the ideal Calcium/Phosperous ratio for a large breed dog should be around 1.5 Calcium/1.0 phosphorus. Or does this ratio only apply to a young, growing puppy?

I'm not sure about dogs...

But it would make sense that growing pups would have different needs.

In people, there is a ratio of Calcium:Phosphorus that needs to be maintained.  However, in the absence of disease (eg: kidney problems), the body will normally excrete any excess stuff. Maybe check with your vet?

Interesting question - let me know what you find out! :)

Thanks for the post!

According to my regular dog food forum, most people steer clear of Calcium levels above 2, especially for large breed dogs. This is what one poster said:  "I never realized the Ca levels were that high. the few studies that have been done show it is the absolute level of calcium, rather than the calcium/phosphorus ratio, that most influences skeletal disease. most dog foods are all around the correct ratio. i definitely wont feed anything at 2% or higher (that is just my comfort level). but i had a gsd pup, definitely a large breed."

I'll check with my vet too and let you know...
