Bulldog Breathing
Submitted by Karen on November 18, 2011 - 11:00amMy 4 month old Bulldog just had the operation for her elongated soft plate. She still is having a great deal of trouble breathing. The vet said to give it another 10 days, but I don't see it getting any better. Exercise and stress make it worse. What else should I do.

How long ago did she have the operation? Vern had his done this summer (while we were on vacation) and he stayed boarded at the vet for 3 days after the surgery. When I picked him up he was still kinda miserable. They told me to make sure he didn't pant too much or exert himself much for 2 weeks after the surgery. I remember thinking the healing was taking too long, but by the end of the second week he was incredibly improved. His snoring went from being obnoxious to a nice steady light snore (and sometimes no snore at all) and he is much more heat tolerant.
I hope she's okay :) Surgery is such a scary thing and recovery takes a while too....

She had the surgery 2 weeks ago, ,it sounds like a person with a stuffy nose, full of fluid. If she runs she has to stop and open her mouth to breath. He trachea is very narrow, that is what it showed on the exray. I don't know if she will every be able to breath right.
First off you shouldn't
be exercising her after palette surgery. She should have been kept quiet for at least 2 weeks. If she is still noisey after 2 weeks then I would be concerned. Did they do laser? Did they also do the largnyl saccules or just the palette? Is she on any anti inflammatory like Rimadyl?

She is still noise after 2 weeks, she is not on any anti inflammatory right now. They just told me they took off a large piece of her palette. I think she may have more than one problem.
Give her a little more time
and maybe the vet should relook at her and listen to her.
But I will tell you that my Cleo that I rehomed with my sister was way more noisey after the surgery then before. She is so loud you have to put her up when people come over. My vet said it is because she has a very thick palette and there is no way to make it thinner. I honestly don't know how true this. I sometimes wonder if he took too much off. I have had another palette surgery done with great success.
