So, I stocked up on bone in chicken breast. (it was on sale) I plan on grinding....Because I AM a chicken and because my bullies gulp and 1 has a narrow trachea. My question is how do I know what my meat to bone ratio is?? What would you say a bone in chickie breast or the bone amount in a thigh/leg combo?? Should I remove the skin?? My grinder should be here Friday....Which means they will be raw by Sat.!!!! PS Judy....I would love a meal plan also?? Should I use any supplements like probiotics or digestive enzymes to start?? Many thanks to all.........
I gauge the amount of
bone by Kofi's stools. In the book that you ordered on raw feeding, that's what I got from Carina's advice. She has a whole section on stool. When Kofi's stools are beige and grainy looking, then I increase the boneless meals for a day or so. I often feed a ground meal in the morning, and perhaps a meaty bone in the evening.
Corina also has a sample week of meals. I haven't read or heard that you need to worry about the bone to meat ratio. Maybe others may be able to comment on that. I do usually throw in a few boneless chicken breasts with the boned chicken. I don't know why I do this, but it just seems right.
I take the skin off since I want Kofi to loose a few pounds. She hasn't had thigh meat yet, only breasts, backs and wings.
I should be getting my grinder soon too. Please let me know how you like it.
Also, I do use
FortiFlora a couple of times a week, but used it daily for the first few weeks. Kofi has been raw for 9 weeks now.
I just received a new raw
food book. In it she suggests using cuts of chicken that are approx 50% bone and 50% meat such as wings necks and backs.
I love reading this stuff, gonna make a smoothie and settle in for a read :)
My mission
for today is to find a place that will sell me chicken backs/necks/wings for a reasonable price. All the places around don't stock it and have to order it and it costs more then chicken breasts when they are on sale. It makes NO sense to me......I guess this town isn't diverse enough......
Have you tried calling
different meat markets? That's how I was referred to one that sold backs, family pkgs of unusual chicken and meat parts.
Or meat processing plants or chicken processors?
i will have to do a back search
i gave the ratio of bone in chicken......i will look back...... i my dogs are 53 to 60 lbs...i feed 1.5 lbs of meat a day....thats meat with no organs or bones.... added.....let me do a search and find the ratios and then we will get on a meal plan...
the best place to shop is a butcher shop....they are a little more willing to deal ....than a grocery store...most butcher shops are owned by the owner.....
i found the ratio for bone with chicken
whole chicken 32% bone dont let everything confuse you.....start with just a couple of lbs of meat...i use cod liver oil tabs for my omega needs i will give you
chicken back 44% bone diet plan before sat.....
chicken neck 75% bone
chicken breast 20% bone
wing 46% bone
leg 27% bone
thigh 21%
Thanks
OK, Great. That makes it easier to think about. So, if Im grinding parts would I need to add a touch more boneless to the mixture??. Whole chicken went on sale for .77 a pound. I will stock up on that too. I think I have about 20lbs of bone in breast and bone in thigh/leg combo so far. That should give me a good start. I figure 1 pound ea. dog. I will have to get a current weight on them. Im thinking Roxy is 50ish and mostly fat and Cooper is 55ish and all muscle.
Thanks so much for all the help and info!!!!
I add boneles meat to the chicken
we don't grind, my husband chops, but I never feed just chicken, it's too much bone. Our grocery store had London Broil on sale so for 2 weeks Audrey's had that plus an ounce or 2 of choped up chicken wings. And her chicken liver. We always add some kind of boneless meat, or it would be more accurate to say we add some chopped up chicken (usually the whole chicken chopped up) to boneless meat. Audrey is 41 pounds so she gets around 13 oz a day.

Hey girl!
I think of you whenever I hack away with my meat cleaver.....if Kofi gets a finger, I won't say whose to blame.
I am so glad to have found your and Judy's posts on feeding raw!
Life is good....Kofi is happy and so am I!
LOL!
my one and only attempt at cutting meat for Audrey resulted in a DEEP cut on my hand that STILL hurts when I move my hand. And it happened before I even had the meat out! I was still at the sharpen the knife stage! My husband was out of town, which is why I was attempting to do it. Now he makes sure she has enough meat cut for as many days as he'll be gone.
He's such a sweetheart.
