Our family's male bulldog has had problems with bleeding from his penis. The problem endures for a few weeks then typically goes away for a few months. He had several surgeries something called Urethral Prolapse. Anyway the vets want to take off his penis but I am looking for alternatives. Does anyone have any experience with this issue or any suggestions?
I would get a second opinion from a Vet
Where do you live? Someone on here may be able to recommend a Vet who may be able to offer you another alternative. I have no experience with a urethral prolapse but I know several who have.
Get a second opinion. Make sure he's really got a prolapse and
not a urethral blockage that is causing the blood as well. Amputation is pretty severe and not something I would tread into lightly with out making sure I had all my options covered. Good luck!
follow up
I would like to hear from those who have had experience with urethra prolapse. What did they try? Was anything affective? Anything negative (ineffective or make it worse). Thank you for your help.

omg. i would go somewhere
omg. i would go somewhere else. higgins took three surgerys, for his prolapse. Each time it would be like a centimeter or milimeter taken off. It still looks strange, but it works.....He would have occasional bleeding after. I would not jump to such drastic measures. My vet also wanted to take off my dogs tail. My dog is now eleven and im fine cleaning his tail.... seems like some vets are surgery crazy..
Teddy had same as Higgins
Before we knew he had a prolapse, we tried other things such as vaseline on the end, and our vet tried cartherizing the blood vessels. When that didn't work, our vet sent us to a specialist. The surgeon neutered (mandatory) and did the trim and tuck on Teddy. He gave no guarantees, but said that it was best procedure the possible solution for now. It went well, and stopped bleeding for about 7 months. We went back and tried it again. He again said there was no guarantee, and the only other possible solution is amputation. (Even amputation has no guarantee, and it comes with different problems). We were not about to do that; were we willing to try it again? I said, "What are we talking about here, blood and money?" He said, "yes".... So, we tried it again, and promised to deal with whatever happened. Here we are, determined not to have anymore surgeries, cleaning up blood every four to five months, lasting about three weeks each time. We just finished an episode; this time it bleed for five weeks. We were hoping someone would have come up with a new solution. Since Higgins is ten and not outgrown it as some have said, we will just plan on loving our Teddy and following him around with a mop now and then. We tried diapers, but they won't stay on. I may try the cummerbund someone suggested worked for them.
