Benign Cyst??

Duffy is 10 and he developed a growth an inch behind his right ear.  The vet says its a benign cyst and will eventually pop.  The option for treatment is a general anesthesia and removal.  Duffy doesn't seem concerned by it but the thing is about the size of a half-sized ping pong ball.  It is also red underneath the fur.  The fur is thinning a bit.  The Vet believes eventually it might pop which will result in a certain amount of bleeding but should heal over or start growing again without removal of the underlying "vessel" as she called it.  Duffy did have a swelling / cyst in this same area and had surgery to remove it and 8 years later it has come back.

Has anyone deal with this?  What should we do?

Cyst

Tough call....not sure if I'd go for surgery on a benign cyst that doesn't bother him at that age, but you know your dog.  I'm wondering  why the vet wouldn't just drain it and/or put him on antibiotic.  Good luck.

Hi....

Is that something you have done in this instance?  I think the Vet said the "Vessel" will re-grow if its simply drained and not cut out completely.  Ironically Duffy had a Cyst in this same area 8 years ago and I had surgery to take it out.....

Cyst

One of my girls who will soon be 10 had a cyst on the very top of her head when she was under a year old.  Vet (that I used at that time) said surgery would have to be done after cyst was shrunk down in order to get it all out.   She was put on antibiotics, and it did go away (so that I couldn't even see where it was), but I had it removed when she had cherry eye surgery.  It never came back.  Recently her son had abscess on his elbow that vet drained with syringe and put him on antibiotic--this is not the same thing, but I wonder if antibiotics could shrink it, too.  Sorry....I don't really know but these are examples of issues we've had that sound similar.  Hope someone else chimes in.  Good luck!

Okay......

I think I will look into it..... surprised it hasn't been discussed more.
