Bald spot

Hi all, Just noticed Angus has a bald spot between his next and left shoulder that wasn't there weeks ago.  Any ideas what could be causing this?  Will the hair grow back?  Any thoughts appreciated.  Thanks!

do you have a picture?

That would help in trying to give you an idea of what is going on with the spot.

poor Angus!

Firstly, he is a BEAUTIFUL bully!  I love that "tiger stripe" brindle color! :)

Is it scaly/scabby or pussy/oozy at all?  Does it itch or bother him in any way?  Have you recently changed shampoos, or like Judy said had any recent vaccinations or applied any topical medications?  It might be a reaction to that.  When I applied frontline to Winston he got all sorts of red scabby welts where I applied the medication...so if you've applied flea/tick stuff that might be the cause.  Once I figured out the Frontline was the cause/source of the welts I gave him a bath with a very mild shampoo (soaped him up twice actually) and washed/rinsed him really REALLY well.  I gave him some Benadryl for a couple days because he seemed to be "itchy" as the welts healed.  He lost some fur b/c of the crusty-ness of the welts, but after his system calmed down and I got rid of the "cause" of the reaction the hair did grow back in just fine.

If not, it might be worth going to the vet to make sure it isn't a staph infection, or mange, or a bacterial infection.  As long as all of those things clear the check list it might be an allergic reaction to an insect bite of some sort.  If, after checking off all those options, and confirming that he doesn't seem to be bothered or reacting to the site I'd say it might be a freak thing and he's probably fine (BUT, watch him like a hawk to make sure symptoms don't progress).

Good luck!  Please let me know if you figure out the cause, or get it resolved, or even have more questions!! :)

did you apply

a flea treatment...or get any vaccines in that area....

Possibly

He did recently get a vaccine -- the one for kennel cough, but it wasn't applied to his skin.  Does that effect a bully's skin?  Any treatment for it?

My sister's doxie had a spot like that

It was demodex mange, which is treatable.

Sadie had some very tiny spots/patches of thinned/missing hair when she was younger which also turned out to be the same thing.  We treated her and she's been fine since.  You should definitely have the vet check it out.
