Dozer is 5 years old this year and this is a NEW issue, possibly allergies? Last fall, these small scabs started to appear so we went to the vet, did some antibiotics and prednisone, which minimized but never cleared it, we repeated that in early winter same results. He doesnt appear to be very bothered by the sores but maybe someone can help point us in a direction?
I had this happen with Onslow for the first time
last year. The vet said it was allergies. We went from steroids to antihistamine back to steroids over and over, like you it would get better for a bit then back to worse - his fur was scabbing and falling out on his back =(. I never did get a full answer or a real fix to his problem. When we had our first frost his skin started getting better so I'm sure (for his case) that it was allergies. My personal solution (hopefully solution) is to put him on allergy meds this year before he breaks out. I will have to wait and see if that helps him this year. Last year was by far the worst allergy season he has experienced - he is 5 years old.
Wish I had a better response for you but I thought I'd share his story. Good luck!
Well maybe we'll do the meds
Well maybe we'll do the meds to clean it up again, and Im wondering if its not a food allergy? But I dont understand why it would just be limited to his back?
My thoughts on why the back
pollen. It comes down from the trees and onto his back when he's out. Could be wrong but it makes sense.
Have you recently had a food change? Onslow has not. And he has been clear all winter.
food
Onslow is adorable! Love that pic! Dozer cant hold still for a pose, anyway, we have never changed foods but I was thinking of trying one of the royal canine vet erinary lines for dif needs. Are you familiar? One is for skin. He eats royal canine for bullys and he gets some protein occasionally from his loving family:) eggs, mostly.
Everybully is different
Onslow has to be on grain free food. I have him on Taste of the Wild Bison and Venicin. Thanks for the compliment on him. Here I am talking about allergies and I have a pic of him sitting in the middle of a bunch of weeds. LMAO
Oops this was sposed to be under food comment.
=/
Similar thing with Rocco
he had a huge scab on his back that i noticed when grooming him and lost a huge chunck of hair, it turned out to be allergies and when i switched his food to grain free it grew back in in no time...i have since had him on natural balance grain free and wild alaskan salmon oil and his coat is thick and bright and he is shedding alot less...but that's him it may be different for you
"Rocco has a spastic wiggle...probally why is nickname is Milkshake"
grain free
are grains hard on bullies system? I realize they are all individuals but is like oatmeal bad for him? I generally watch his stool for signs:) But sometimes he likes oatmeal, I started that when I wanted him to have a little honey for head tremors, that we dont have currently have.
My Tucker had scabs from
My Tucker had scabs from sores all over his body when we first got him. The vet said it was a skin infection and prescribed some antibiotics that he was on for a couple of weeks. It took care of it and healed it from the inside out. She also gave aus a spray as a topical treatment, but said the antibiotics will do the job. It cleared up very nicely.
my gabby has been scabby..
my 14 yr old kelpie started getting scabby on her chest , randomly around her body, she did loose a little hair on top her tail area and the area is just bald now and wont grow back. vet told me it was just because she is getting old. but now i wonder if its something she is eating too..hmmmm
sincerely, christine
It pays to do your homework!
I know his issues bother me more than him but it doesnt take long for a bulldog to become a mess! Id like to solve this before the next issue pops out:)
