Back on the Raw wagon= funky ear gunk

Back on raw for about 2 weeks or so. So far just chicken and a little beef (really little) like 4oz. 2x a week + their organs. Why are we getting black ear gunk in 1 of the dogs?? Never had it before. Is it an allergy??

P.S. I have discovered the CLEAVER!!! No more grinding chickie parts for me!!! yeah!!

Hey girl, did you have

some trouble with raw?

Sorry to hear about ear gunk. Did you try a diluted vinegar wash?

Kofi hasn't had that problem, but I've read that it can help.

Love to your guys.

Trouble

I got burnt out on it. Grinding, watching for sales, packing for 2 dogs etc. etc. Put them on Orijen and 1 did excellent but my problem child started to suffer from yeast overgrowth, ear infections, bad poops and did I miss those raw poops. YES!! Switched her to a potato free food and no better. So here we are again. This time I am armed with my clever and  I am looking into joining a raw feeding co-op.  So about 2-3 months off the wagon and now we are back on and hopefully to stay.

I have the zymox ear cleaner and with in 3 days the black is back. He had it slightly when we did raw before but now its much worse. Did not have it on kibble. Hmmmmm........

I have progressed to almost

entirely PMR. The dogwise.com raw feeding forum has been a tremendous help. I rarely grind anymore. I use cleaver and kitchen shears. I'm much more relaxed now and PMR is so easy.

Hope all goes well with you. Great to have a co-op. Should make things easier for you.

we have progressed also

First it was ground bone, then it was very chopped, then it was only a couple of big hunks, and now it's "here's a bunny leg, enjoy!"

We also only do meat. It makes things SO much easier and simple.

She still gets her DE, fish oil and garlic, and now apple cider vinegar. It is her vinagrette dressing on her meat! She really loves it.

Garlic

How much garlic do you give?? I was thinking of adding that to the diet also. I guess I am on the right track then. Next I will be just throwing a carcass at them :)

I put one clove

into her boneless meal. She gets boneless in A:M and bone in P:M. The clove should be diced and added fresh daily. It's also a great repellent. The instructions are to do each day, but I probably do three or four times a week.

Kofi loves pork ribs, and those bones are edible.

I just change around according to what she got the week previously and watch her stools.

She has slimmed down and taken on more muscle. I've just noticed the change in this last month. She's been on raw for nine months now.

She gets one clove

crushed. If it's really big we cut it smaller. We mix it w/ salmon oil, apple cider vinegar, a bit of water and diatomaceous earth. Her vinagrette! We coat her meat with it, and she makes sure to lick every single drop out of her bowl.

Just like Carol and Kofi we

Just like Carol and Kofi we feed the PMR so no grinding for us either, hopefully the ear gunk is just a cleasning thing going on, I would do the vinegar wash also in the ears. Joining a co-op would be a great way to get alot of meat at great prices so you don't have to worry about finding cheap meat all the time. Hope the ear clears up soon.

I wonder

if he's allergic to chicken or beef? What was the meat source in the kibble he ate?

Have you ever heard of stomach grass??

Someone I met while picking up my meat order has some stomach grass from obviously "grass fed" beef. She wants to give it to me for my dogs to try. Here is what it says on the website (A new item we have is the stomach grass ( the contents of the tripe) it smells just like the tripe and the dogs love it)  So....I thought when dogs ate grass they threw up?? Is this something I should try or politely take it with thanks. I have never heard of such......

I have never heard of it

Someone tried to give Audrey a dehydrated tripe treat once and she was having NONE of that.

I personally would pass.

I wondered the same

INGREDIENTS
Fresh boneless chicken*, chicken meal, fresh boneless salmon*, turkey meal, herring meal, russet potato, peas, sweet potato, fresh boneless turkey*, fresh whole eggs*, fresh chicken liver*, fresh boneless lake whitefish*, fresh boneless walleye*, sun-cured alfalfa, pea fiber, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), organic kelp, pumpkin, chicory root, carrots, spinach, turnip greens, apples, cranberries, blueberries, licorice root, angelica root, fenugreek, marigold flowers, sweet fennel, peppermint leaf, chamomile, dandelion, summer savory, rosemary, vitamin A, vitamin D3, vitamin E, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, d-calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, selenium yeast, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecium.

But why not a problem with the kibble....Maybe it has so much "other meat" in it. Now they are getting the the real deal. Chicken is always there base. This morning they got sardines+chicken. Tonight, beef+chicken. I find if I give a whole meal of just beef or fish it upsets the tummy. Too much chicken????I love the vinaigrette idea. Do you pre-mix or mix fresh daily?? :)
CathyandAudrey's picture

we mix fresh daily

she gets it once a day. The garlic needs to be used within like 15 mins or so of crushing to get the best benefit from the allicin. The main reason we started it is to make the DE easier to feed. She would still eat her meat with it on it, but it seemed kinda dry to me.
