Gosh, my poor Mr. Higgins has the worst luck. His right ear flap was hugely swollen today at 4:30 when I got home. I only realized it when I went to scratch him around his neck/ears. He screamed.
Well, I called my vet, took him right in and they are keeping the clinic open late for an "emergency" repair. He is in surgery right now, and as we all know, it is so hard when they are not home with us, and under anaesthesia. Vet said he would be under for an hour and not sure if he will stay the night.
There was a very scary discussion about (hope not) intubation difficulties and that he would have all the tracheostomy stuff right closeby. He did have palate/saccules done 2 years ago, but there is obvious regrowth or scar tissue and airway difficulties again. I have not wanted another repair as he was in the ICU the last time and, well, he`s had 5 anaesthetics already (now 6).
Please pray for my sweet boy . I am just so worried that he is under again. I cannot eat or drink and don`t know what to do with myself.
BTW I am in Toronto Ontario Canada and the quote is over $1,600.00 Do you believe it?
I am so sorry
that Mr. Higgins is having that problem.
My heart goes out to you! It is the very worst when our precious babies have problems!
Sending a heart full of love and healing to you and sweet Mr. Higgins.
He is home ! !
I got him home about 9:30pm my time. He seems stoned as he has a fentanyl patch. My vet had a tiny issue extubating him and was worried briefly that he would need to go down to the ICU downtown. However, he did well after that scare and now I have him. I am so relieved. Vet actually had to leave a long incision open and stitch the edges apart and insert drains so no more blood could build up. I can`t feed him until tomorrow. He looks cute in his bonnet (collar). This one has paw prints all over it and scalloped edges.
My vet did verify the airway is bad again, he thinks it is saccules more than palate. He said the ET tube was a small one although wouldn`t tell me the size. Probably it would have just added to my big freak out.
I am going to have him sleep with me for sure.
Thanks Carol for your good wishes. I read your posts all the time. I did feed him raw for a year but urinary crystals returned. I still think raw is the best. Maybe next bully.
Whew
Atleast you can get some sleep tonight knowing he is with you.

Skasqueeeeeeakaaay!!
Katie & Chumlee
hey Katie, thanks
Gee, I suppose they gave him lots of i.v. fluids because he peed in my car, outside 3 times, twice more on the carpet, once in his bed. Poor guy. At least he is asleep now, not me, I am wide awake and doing laundry. It is midnight here in Ontario.
I am feeling sooooo much better. My sweet Mr. Higgins.
Poor guy
Chumlee peed like a maniac his 24 hours or so after his 2nd hospital visit. What a scare geez! He is certainly loved so he will heal up quick!
Skasqueeeeeeakaaay!!
Katie & Chumlee
So glad that he is with you now!
Please let us know how he does for the next few days.
Kofi sends him globbers!
Poor Mr Higgins!
I am SO glad he's home now, geesh poor guy! Please let us know how he is today!
Cathy and Audrey
I'm sorry
We had that happen to one of our cats--and the recovery was like 3 weeks before all the sutures came out. It is always scary when they go under. Ozzy had a corneal ulcer last summer--he was rushed from his regular vet to Tuft on a Monday and he didn't come home til Thursday night--it was awful in the house without him
I will say some prayers
Lyn
I hope all goes well. What vet do you use?
I hope everything goes well, and he feels better soon.
I live in Toronto aswell, I was wondering what vet you use, that sounds pretty pricey.
My vet is great, and he has alot of bully patients, he is open until 10pm 7 days a week.
I love my vet
I cannot imagine a better vet. Deji Odetoyinbo at Bathurst Animal Clinic. I have had him for years. I refer lots of bully owners of my Toronto Bulldog Meetup Group to him. He is worth the drive, and I do not live near his clinic. He considered taking Mr. Higgins home with him last night, then he stabilized. He saved the life of my last bully. He has 8 years emerg clinic experience and tons of bullies in his practice. I have his cell phone no. and if my boy were in an emergency, he would want me to call him, anytime. He easily could have just sent me down to the emerg clinic instead of doing an after hours surgery, but that is just how much he cares.
Every person who I refer to his clinic is impressed with him. Mr. Higgins has put him to the test with cherry eye, urinary crystals, 3 luxating patella repairs, ACL repair, palate/saccules, MRSI in both ears, and many complications post knee surgeries that make him the poster bulldog for handling anesthesia well (until last night) although it turned out o.k.
Deji takes tons of time with each client to answer questions, ( I always have tons) draws pictures on his blackboard to fully explain a diagnosis and puts up with me crying my head off in his clinic. When he says he will phone me as soon as surgery is over and my dog is standing, he always does.
He has referred my boy to the best specialists in the city. I may complain about the high prices, but would not change vets at all. The insurance has paid out $24,000.00 in vet bills in 6 years not counting last night. Deji has enabled my boy to have a happy, pain free life.
I forgot to mention
The very best part of having an excellent vet is the peace of mind it brings you. I think we are all the same, and will spend whatever money our bullies need to help them when they need it. We all want only the very best for our sweet bullies.
You are so very fortunate!
I have not found a vet in my area that I am truly comfortable with. There is one "bulldog vet" listed an hour and a half away, but when I called the receptionist said that he wasn't really a bulldog vet. That made me uncomfortable so I haven't made the drive yet.
I am starting with a new vet in a couple of weeks that I did a consult with over the phone, and I liked his philosophy, very open minded and willing to work with me and Kofi on any issues that may come up.
what happened with your mr.
what happened with your mr. higgins ear? was it infected or like a sist or something? poor baby. I am so happy his home with you now....
ear flap was a balloon
that is how swollen it was. No infection, no mites, just a hematoma (full of blood). I cannot even begin to describe how swollen it was and how he screamed when I unknowingly touched him. Today he is mellow and still getting pain management through the patch. He doesn`t seem to mind the collar at all. What sweet dogs these bulldogs are.
The ear is scary looking, even for me a nurse, I suppose because he is my baby. You can see cartilage and all the tubes sewn in for drainage.
I appreciate all the responses and good wishes from the lovely bully owners here. He has been through so much, I just freak out every time.
