Aural hematoma?

So princesss started to develop a little quarter shaped bubble in her right ear flap Saturday a week ago. The vet & I decided to take the watch and see approach. This past Sunday it spread through her her ear flap. We went in and had it drained and injected with a steriod. The vet said that 75% of the time it comes back. I have been trying to do pressure and cold compresses but she doesn't want me to touch it =( Any suggestions on how to wind up in the 25% group.

TIA, ashley

Hematoma

The best thing to do is leave it alone and it will go down on its own. My boy had this and also had it drained once. Sure enough it came back but went away in a week or so. The ear may have some few extra wrinkles, but that was ok by me. Hugs to you bully.

Aww we had this too

My Mr. Higgins` was huge the first time and it was surgically repaired right away.  He was in a lot of obvious pain. 10 months later the other ear developed a smaller one. We tried draining it which worked for 24 hours then it blew up, surgery again. My vet gave me the bad news that even with surgical repairs it can happen again!  Not sure how that could happen with all the scar tissue. In spite of this his ears look normal although he now battles chronic blocked canals.

I agree....

....unless you show, you can leave it alone.  Our girl had one almost as large as the ear flap--it went away on its own, but left a lumpy ear flap--barely noticable that it's different, and you only know about the lumps when you feel it.

how is her ear hematoma?

I am wondering if the steroid injection has worked for Princess. I did not know about this as a resolution. Hopefully she will not need the surgery like my boy did.

Just got over one

Just went through this and I listen to some advice from the board and left it alone and it went down on it's own. Took about two weeks and left a little bumpy ridge but not even noticeable. Also, I will note that, Matilda is on predisone, 10 mg every other day and she takes an antibotic which all might of helped with the hematoma. All I know was it was a hugh relieve, when it went down on it's own and no surgery required.

Update & ?

So we did get it drained last Tuesday and by Thursday it had filled back up =( the vet said if was a hematoma there was a 75% chance it would fill back but if it was a ceruma (sp?) the steriod injection would help it. Well it drew back blood not clear fluid so we knew hematoma. But I opted against the sx and did cool compresses and held pressure on her ear (which she hated!) but it did not help.

What my vet failed to mention is that he only works TU & wed now and I dont know the other vets very well in the office. So we have been just watching it. She does not seem to be in any pain at all and it seems to be going down a little too but a little hard. Is there anything that I should do to it? TIA, Ashley

Steroids will help

I gave Morgan prednisone both times she had a hematoma. That was all we did and both times her ear shrunk back to

normal.
