She has been getting it for a month or so now, we had to really go slow because too much gives her really loose poops, and she HATES having a dirty butt.
She is now up to one teaspoon, recommended for her 38 pounds is about 4 teaspoons. I don't think I will even try working her up to that much though.
She gets the one teaspoon in the am, and I wipe her tear stains and nose with it. It works nicely to keep her nose moist, and it actually did fade the tear stains! They are not gone, and I won't wash her face everyday-I am not going to irritate her skin by over-washing it. The stains always darken when she eats beef liver, and she just finished a week's worth of liver and the stains are about the same. So that's an awesome bonus!
She still gets her fish oil in the evening. The coconut oil does not have the omega 3 fatty acids like the fish oil does. She is SO SHINY. She has a very soft coat anyways, but now it is much glossier. The coconut oil is the only different thing we are doing. She hasn't had a bath since last April-7 months now, and she looks feels and smell fantastic!
so shiny and glossy!

she is really loaded in the front......
what a front she has...she is built like my wilson a little fire hydrante i call him...and she looks great......i also loved your christmass picture of her with the ears...she has alot of expression.......
thanks Judy!
she really does have a huge front, you can see it especially after she slimmed down. She is only 38 pounds but she is STRONG!
Poor dog, I hate making her so miserable with the antlers but she was so cute! She can handle it once a year. We tried to get the grandbaby in the picture too, that was NOT happening. He wouldn't sit for even a second.

Tear Stains
I have found it very interesting that the raw feeders have all said the tear stains go away with raw but that has not been my experience. Kohl's face is a mess and he never had tear stains on the prepackaged raw. It's like he's weeping blood from his eyes. I've been giving him Tylan for a couple of weeks now with no luck. I can't stand the staining...it looks horrible. I'm not having the best experience with this raw stuff. Not sure I'm sold on it. He gets itchy on chicken. Ester is also getting some tear stains and shes been bright white for years. Her coat is gorgeous though, soft and shiney.
I'm trying beef from another supplier this week, so will see if that makes a difference. Have some venison coming as well.
Audrey has always had tear stains
Tylosan cleared them up, and that is the only time she has ever been without them.
Beef and beef liver and lamb make them darker. I don't know why! Audrey's diet is usually at least 50% beef, plus beef liver and beef kidney. I belong to a Holistic Bulldogger group, and tear stains are still common with raw fed bulldogs, and a lot of them also noticed the stains get darker with beef and lamb. Audrey thrives on beef, she has so much energy, her coat is gorgeous, very small poops, very little gas, we just deal with the tear stains.
When we switched to raw I was SO hoping they would go away. The biggest change was they stopped smelling bad. It was definitely yeast before, and now it's not.
I hate the staining too. We have had 3 vets look at her eyes and they all say there is no visible physical problem, the last vet told me the most likely reason for the staining is because her tear ducts do not drain internally properly, so her eyes water. Playing with her ball makes them worse, she slams her face on furniture or outside on bushes and brush. She is CRAZY with that ball, and she does play with it every day. You can see how discolored the inside of her legs are, from constantly being wet from that ball!
The stains do lighten if she gets her face washed daily, but then I can see the skin getting redder and redder, it's just not worth it. There is always bacteria on the surface of the skin, and the bacteria mixed with the tears makes the stain. The ONLY way to get rid of it for Audrey (we have used filtered water for years, given every type of protein we can find, no grains, no veggies, no starches, nothing changes them at all) is to either dry up the tears, which would NOT be good, or kill the bacteria, which actually would not be very good either, considering the only truly effetive way to do that is by an antibiotic, which also kills the beneficial bacteria.
You really have not had a very good experience with raw so far! I wouldn't give up yet though. Some things take a LONG long time to really fully change. We don't give Audrey chicken anymore either. She gets itchy too, it doen't happen right away but after a few days we notice her scratching her face on the furniture. She also still find the grandbaby's tidbits he drops, it is impossible to find them all beofre Audrey does. Audrey does not do well with starches and grains. She gets very itchy, and irritable too. I guess I'd be cranky too if my face was insanely itchy .

I missed...
the beginning of this thread and am curious as to why you are giving Audrey coconut oil. She looks great!
someone asked about it a while ago
and I had been hearing so much about it I thought I'd try it. The list of benefits is pretty impressive.
Audrey is only 3, so she is not having any noticeable signs of joint probelms yet, but hopefully it will still work to keep her joints healty! She isn't having skin issues or digestive problems that we were trying to fix, but I thought it would be nice to give it a try.
I noticed a difference in how shiny she is, her coat looks amazing!

Very interesting, thanks.

Can I ask how you give it to her?
Do you just drop a spoonful in her food or what?
I am terrified of giving this to my dogs. Zoey has had pancreatitis in the past and the vet said to feed only low fat food because once you have had pancreatitis once, you are more susceptable to getting it again.
I too have heard such great things about it and am trying to find something that will help with sheading, I know it will never go away but I swear I pick up an entire dog's worth of fur ever week!
I give it to her in her food bowl
I drop it in her bowl plain or mix it with mashed banana. She loves it!
Audrey eats raw meat, I don't worry about fat because that's where her energy comes from. I am not sure at all about coconut oil and pancreatitis. Do you have warning signs to look for? You have to start with a very small amount of coconut oil, we gave Audrey 1/4 teaspoon at first. Too much too fast gave her really loose poops, and she can not stand to have her butt dirty!
Audrey doesn't shed much at all. She has one major shed time in the spring and that's it. Do you give fish oil at all? The omega 3 fatty acids really do help with shedding. We switched to sardine/anchovy oil and she does great on it.

Signs of pancreatitis....
is drewling mostly....neausea.
The day before we had to admit Zoey we took her to the dog park. She would normally run off and have a great time but not this time. She actually jumped up and me almost in a panic. We had no idea what was going on. The next day (Easter Sunday) we woke to her vomitting 15 times in 1.5 hours. We went to the vet, he gave her a shot of anti nausea meds and said if she keeps vomitting, then she has to be admitted. She was admitted by Monday lunchtime.
So.....I have to be extra careful with what I give her and the thought of just giving her oil in her food just makes me uneasy. I never gave her Omega 3s for the same reason. I gave them to Cain and noticed that it made him very greasy especially in his ears. He would have sooo much ear wax and he is not exactly the greatest guy when it comes to cleaning ears.
Oh well, I guess I will skip it. Does not sound like a good option for me but thanks!
I don't blame you
If you aren't sure about it then the risk isn't worth it!

Benefits of Coconut Oil
The benefits of coconut oil for humans is HUGE, and I can only imagine it would have to benefit our fur babies as well!
Coconut oil and olive oil are the only thing we use in our home, olive oil is for non-heated cooking, and coconut for everything else. It is a medium chained fatty acid, (MCT) in comparison to a Long chained fatty acid (LCT) like other vegetable oils. LCTs are difficult to break down and stored as fat. MCTs (coconut oil) is eaily digested and spent immediatly.
Coconut oil also has tons of healing properties, it is convereted to a lauric acid, which provides anti viral, anit bacterial, and anti protozoa properties.
Coconut oil helps balance out our Omega 3 to Omega 6 ratio. Vegetable oils are high in omega 6, which throws us all of balance, creating an insufficient Omega 3 level, leading to Chronic Degenerative Diseases.
It is also fantastic for topical use as well (perfect lotion!) I get a good grade coconut oil at tropical traditions (online) it is a little high priced, but it lasts a long time. It is pure and simple and healthy....they also have real coconut, you know, the kind without sugar. LIttle shreds and BIG flakes! Kippah loves stealing a flake or two of coconut. We eat it with frozen blue berries and "So Delicious" coconut milk mushed up like ice cream..fantastic stuff!
WHY oh WHY didn't I think to use coconut oil for Kippah? I am going to give her an itty bit every day and see how she does, especially since with the cold setting in the air is getting pretty darn dry.

How do you know how much to
How do you know how much to give your bullies? I have a 3 yr old 53lbs and a 6 month old 35lbs.

here is an article
http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/the-health-benefits-of-coconut-oil/
this does give different information from the article I had found earlier about the amount. The other article said way more, which I was not even going to try to give to Audrey. This one also says twice daily, so far we only give it once.
