atopica

went back to the vet  today with buster last week he got a shot for his alergies and he thought the hairloss on his back was from a mite and he put stuff on it. alergies a lot better but his back was getting worse.after looking at lots of posts on here im convinced he has staph the simptoms are the same and the pictures people have posted are exactly the same too.little hives that dry up and fall off taking the hair with it. he has loads of these on his back the're not big patches and his top coat covers them when he turns his back to you you can see lots of small light coloured patches on his back. anyway the vet on duty today was a different one she thinks his back is due to his alergies she called it atopy she said he would need something called atopica it will cost 256 euro a month for it. i said i'd ring the insurance company to see would they cover it. they said i'd have to put in a claim first and see if it is approved. rang the vet and asked could i claim before i got the atopica to see if its covered. they said no i'd have to buy the stuff then see if i can be reimbursed from his insurance. so im stuck between a rock and a hard place i dont have 200 euro to spare and then wait and see. she gave me a bottle of malaseb to wash him in. just wondering if anyone else used alopica and is it good does it work will come up with the money somewhere if thats what he needs but dont want to go through all that expence if thats not what it is. pic below is how it starts like a hive sorry not great pic.

atopica

We tried atopica for our bulldog with who has bad allergies.  It did cost a lot, but we thought if it helped it would be worth it.  Unfortunately he has a seizure from the medication.  That was his one and only seizure, so we knew it was from the medication.  Obviously not all dogs that take this have the side effects, but ours unfortunately did.  He didn't have his seizure until the second dose.  I hope you find what works for your bully.

Atopica

I tried Atopica for my bully that had major allergies. We had tried allergy shots too which did nothing for his allergies. Unfortunately Atopica did not help him either. The vet left him on prednisone which helped his allergies but I would never advise to giving this stuff all the time like I did him. He died last year from cancer and he was only 6 years old and I do wonder if the prednisone had something to do with it because he also had fluid build up around his heart and I read that it was a sign of kidney failure which prednisone is suppose to affect the kidneys. Anyways just because it didn't help my babies allergies doesn't mean it might not help your babies allergies. So what the heck I would give it a try if you can't find anything that works for him and just see if you might can tell a difference. I have heard it helping dogs before but of course mine wasn't one of them :(

Atopica--

--has many serious possible side effects, and I wouldn't use it.  Please read up on it.  You might even find information in the old BDW search.  Maleseb often gives good results, and I'd recommend giving it a chance for a month or two.  Over the years one or another of my Bulldogs has developed similar (if not the same) coat issues that seem to eventually resolve even when nothing is done.  As long as he's not uncomfortable, I'd try shampoos and maybe topicals like Panelog or try cleaning with Listerine and dusting with the Gold Bond when dry (even a course of Cephalexin antibiotic is commonly given for skin issues and or staph).   Good luck!

Cyclosporine

We use Cyclosporine (50 mg modified) on our bulldog, he hasnt been on it long term, just off and on for a couple months. We started out at 100mg modified but that caused vomitting and made him act "blah". So far so go with the 50mg though, and it's cheaper!! Try an online pharmacy, we used health warehouse.com for the 100mg and it only cost about $75... The 50mg I got filled at target for $45... I have AKC Pet Healthcare Plan and it usually covers at least 80% of all his drugs! I know how ya feel, paying so much for meds for your pup but you want to do everything you possibly can for them!!! I hope this helps and I hope your guy gets better soon!!

Listerine

....use the original brown (gold) Listerine, and the Gold Bond is medicated powder.

Atopica

Please be very careful if you choose to use the medication...and do not go over the recommended dosage.  I had a bulldog with severe allergies that was seeing the top Dermatologist at Tufts Veterinary school.  He ended up prescribing Atopic..the dosage was almost 2X the recommended amount.  When I called to verify he confirmed that is they way they dose and not to follow the box recommendations.  4 months after beginning the Atopica..while it did work...my boy was at Stage 5 Lymphoma and despite beginning chemo treatments passed 9 days after diagnosis.  I would never use this drug again.

oh my god

and did you find out if the atopica caused it. well they probebly wouldnt tell you if it did. there is no way buster is going on it now. im bathing him every 2 or 3 days with malseb at the moment is that too much if his skin heals i'll keep useing the malseb once a month and start him on antihistimines before the pollen season next year. so sorry to hear about your boy but thank you for shareing your story with me. out of all the replies i think i only got 1 or 2 positive  ones about atpoica. if it is causeing so much problems why are vets still recomending it. thank god for your site if i hadnt found it i probebly would have gotten him the atopica because like doctors we belive vets when we bring our pets to them. and who knows what would have happened dont get me wrong our vet is very good but mabey a little overentusiastic about pushing this.

thanks so much

Atopica

We have been using this on our Bulldog for just about 1 year. It has worked well for her with no side effects. This spring her allergies got worse to the point where the Atopica could not keep her comfortable so I added the over the counter Aerius allergy medication and it seems to be working. I purchase the drug on-line at it is considerably cheaper than from the vets. Good luck with your decision.

Atopica

No one would ever admit the drug caused the Lymphoma but on the insert of the drug it lists Lymphoma as a possible side effect and as this drug supresses the T-Cell Lymphocites I am convinced that the Atopica along with the incorrect dosage did cause his Cancer and I would never give this drug again.  There are many things you can do for allergies...bathing 2 to 3 times a week in Malaseb (which you are currently doing), Resicort - this is a over the counter leave in conditioner that helps control the itching, hydroxozine which is prescription strength benedryl, washing all of his bedding in an scent free detergent like All Free and change his bedding frequently.  Do not use any Febreeze as alot of dogs are allergic to this..and be careful of anything you wash your carpets with.  If the smell is too strong he will most likely have a reaction to it.

Please feel free to e-mail me if you wish to discuss further.  connie03062@gmail.com

thank you

no they wont admit it because they are making too much money off of it. i already wash his bedding once a week should i do it more often. i used to wash the floors with fabreeze but i have stopped useing it someone on this site suggested bicarb of soda for his chair( which is fabric) i use that now on his chair and the carpet in the sittingroom. it really works. i also steem the carpet and his chair every few months. never heard of all freebut i will find s sent free detergent for his bedding .  this site is great everyone is so frendily buster is my first bulldog and up till now i had no problems so its lovely to be able to ask questions without feeling stupid.

thanks
