anyone with mast(?) cell tumor experience?

a friend of mine just got the diagnosis for her bully. she had a lump removed from his underside, stage 3. vet recommended another surgery, which he had and chemo. the 2nd surgery was last week. she called today and asked what the histology report was. vet tech said they did not send any samples in. is that normal procedure? i didn't think so. they claim because they 'got it all' they didn't need to. anyone with any experience as to what to expect or what protocol you went through?

thank you in advance.

I do, unfortunately...

Ollie had one on his neck.  The vet and I both thought it was a wart, he put Ols under to take a nasty looking lump off his tummy and did the 'wart' at the same time, turned out the tummy thing was a cyst, the wart was a mast cell tumor.  MCT's are a lot like human skin cancers, hopefully if they got it all, he will be fine but you always have to watch for others popping up.  They did send Ollie's to pathology, but they didn't know what it was before they removed it.  After the report came back as MCT, the vet did a second surgery to get clean margins and he took quite a big more skin from his heck.   He didn't need chemo because the path report said his was a non-aggressive type.  So far he's been cancer free.  Let me know if you or your friend have any more questions.

Mast Cell Tumor

MacKenzie has had 1.  We just removed the tumor and he sent it to have it tested and it was maglignant, but Stage 1 if I remember right.  My vet took alot of tissue around the tumor when he removed it.  Some vets biopsy first, lab test, then surgically remove.  My vet didn't want to put him under twice and he was pretty sure what it wa so we had just 1 procedure.

Makes sense not to retest after removal if the first surgery was just a biopsy.
