antibiotic question

Well Tuffy has been on Cephalexin for about two months now. He's had two refills after the original prescriptin His skin has never looked better. No more zits, scabs have all healed and fur has actually grown back on his chin. So do I push the vet to keep him on this prescription longterm or just take him off of it and see what happens? And if the acne does flare up again off the meds what does that mean exactly...?

I would ask your vet these questions....

They may want to skin scrape one more time to be certain the bacteria is gone. Then they will pull him off the meds when they think he is ready:-)

the longer you use an antibotic

the body will get resistent to it.....you have to find the problem and solve that...i would not keep throwing an antibotic or pred on a problem...god forbid tuffy really  needs an antibotic but non will work because he is resistent to antibotics....you dont want to end up with a raging infection......not treatable...i have as a vet tech seen this happen....

Thanks everyone. The vet...

put Tuffy on one more round of the antibiotics to make sure the infection is totally out of his system and then we will stop the antibiotics.

I agree, Judy, that we don't want him to get resistant to antibiotics in case he ever does get seriously ill.
