Another 'Rex' problem - this time his mouth

OK, so Rex has been battling skin bacterial/fungal infections, possible demodex in the last month. Yesterday the vet said he has an enterococcus bacterial skin infection - definitely the results came back from the lab. So he is on baytil for that and ivermectin still for the possiblity of demodex.

NOW I have another problem with him. This morning when he yawned awake, I was in a position to look in his mouth directly. on his right side, from underneath his tongue I saw something very strange. It looked like a big ballon filling up with air and expanding and then deflating as his yawn stopped. It was the so strange. It almost looked like a bullfrogs throat expanding and deflating. It was the same color as the rest of his mouth, a pale pink, and i've watched him closely all day and he yawned another few times and the same thing happened. it is definitely just on one side of his mouth. I examined his mouth, his teeth and it all looks normal, i cannot pick up his tongue to look - when i try he thinks i am playing with him and pulls away...oh this dog has shortened my life in the past month, i know that for certain. Has anyone have a clue what i might be seeing????!!!! thanks all!

Gosh, no idea!

A vet will be able to better tell you what that may be.

Is your boy on vitamin C at all? Try giving him some to boost his immune system and help him get over the mange. You can give a 500 mg vitamin c daily in his food.

yes!

i am giving him pet tabs plus which has vitamin C in it. Just started on the vitamins about 2/3 weeks ago when we switched his diet to home cooked food. I got the recipe book, "Dr. beckers healthy dog and cat recipe book" and she covers all the vitamin and mineral needs as well as the meat and carbs they need. great book for anyone looking into raw or cooked diet. thanks for the suggestion :-)

I am not sure he has mange. The scrapping came back that he has entercoccus bacterial infection and it is resistant to antibiotics. thus the reason the cephilexin wasnt working. the vet never saw any indication of mange, but wanted to treat for it just in case. although i think his skin is somewhat better, i am going to call a new vet tomorrow -monday. thanks again.

There are salivary glands under the tongue

other then that, I can't think of any thing else it might be.

yes i think it is salivary glands

from what i found searching on the web the can get clogged. I think it is because he got a new chew toy a couple of weeks ago and he has been chewing it for hours each day. he so loved it and we hate to take things away from him. it is a hard plastic hollow tube that we fill with meat. The glands can get inflammed from trauma to the mouth and i think it is from his hours of chewing. my guess anyway. regardless he is breathing and eating ok, doesnt seem to bother him, but will talk to the vet about it this week.
