That would be the only reason I would try grain free. Otherwise, most of the high end grain free foods also offer a good feed with some grains in it. If you are having allergy issues, it is safe to switch, but I really wouldn't want to unless it is allergy related. Also, if you DO go grain free, make certain you switch up every few bags to a different variety in that line. Dogs will develop allergy issues if they are on a single source protein for too long.
